Bannister: Programs planned to improve education performance

As more than fifty thousand public school students head back to classrooms across the country today, Minister of Education Desmond Bannister revealed that education officials plan to launch a number of programs which focus on improving educational performance and meeting the needs of students.
Bannister made the comments while giving his 2010/2011 National Back to School Address at the William B. Twelve in custody after huge brawl

TWELVE weeks of summer vacation came to a head this weekend with a widespread brawl at an entertainment complex where an estimated 2,000 youngsters were said to be in attendance.
Police responded to a disturbance at Mario's Bowling and Entertainment Palace (MBEP) shortly after 11pm on Saturday evening, where fighting continued despite the efforts of officers.
As a result, twelve persons were taken into custody for various offences such as making death threats, hurling insults, disorderly behaviour, and resisting arrest.

Hurricane Earl north of British Virgin Islands
As of 3:00 pm, the eye of Hurricane Earl was just north of The British Virgin Islands. There are several warnings and watches in effect. None have been issued for The Bahamas although the Turks and Caicos islands are on a Tropical Storm Watch.

To aid in the restructuring of the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (BCB) into a public broadcasting service, its board has suggested selling Power 104.5 FM and Inspiration 107.9 FM, two of ZNS Bahamas' four radio stations.
It has also been proposed that ZNS Bahamas northern news service in Grand Bahama be scaled down to have it function more as a part of a national news gathering service, according to the restructuring proposal BCB executive chairman Michael Moss presented to Cabinet on Tuesday.

In an effort to expand its presence in the Caribbean, which might include The Bahamas, Cable&Wireless has committed to investing over$600 million in the region.

Cases of late stage cancer in many Family Islanders

The lack of proper access to screening and education is leadingto the detection of cancer in many Family Island residents at late stages, according to President of the Cancer Society of the Bahamas Earle R. Bethell.
This is why the non-profit organization is expanding its reach beyond New Providence, he said.
According to Ministry of Health records, 80 to 100 new cancer patients are seen each year at the Princess Margaret Hospital. Some of those patients from the Family Islands travel long distances for even basic treatment.

BISHOP Simeon Hall called on the Ministry of Education to ban all "homosexuals, lesbians, and heterosexual predators" from the nation's classrooms ahead of the opening of the new school year.
In a statement issued to the media yesterday, Bishop Hall said the ministry should "assure" the public that these sexual "deviants" would not be allowed into the nation's classrooms.
