Calling All Amateur Artists
Would you like to see your artwork hanging up in the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas? Now is your chance - the NAGB is holding its second All-Star Amateur Artist night in October and have put out a call for works from non-professional artists for the special weekend-long exhibition.
Earlier this year, the NAGB hosted its first All-Star Amateur Artist night to close out their retrospective on Kendal Hanna, welcoming works by amateur artists that evoked Hanna's abstract expressionism and portraiture.
This time, explains NAGB Education Officer Jordia Benjamin, to close out their "Amos Ferguson: Bahamian Outsider" exhibition, the NAGB is making a call for works in any medium that directly engage with Ferguson's themes as outlined in the gallery - Prayin', Tellin', Bloomin', Wedin', Sailin', Playin' and Livin' - and that evoke Ferguson's style.
"We don't want an exact replica of Amos' work; we want you to be inspired by his work," Benjamin said. "This year we are giving artists more ways to express and explore the themes we've outlined while being inspired by Amos' technique - like his color palate, color blocking or even dotting technique."
Like Kendal Hanna, Ferguson was never truly appreciated wholly by the Bahamian community for his paintings, even when they gained international acclaim. Through the All-Star evenings, the NAGB hopes to pay proper homage to amateur artists and the value they add to the community despite the challenges they face.
"Amos' own Bahamian culture still thinks of him as an outsider and that was something he dealt with even until his death," said Benjamin. "Amateur artists want to be creative and exhibit their talents, but at the same time they are still the outsider of the art community; so this is the way they can be recognized for their talents."
Indeed, the event is a chance for amateur artists to take serious steps toward professional artistic careers, says Benjamin, not only because it is a chance for their work to be displayed in a professional setting, but also a chance to make connections with collectors and interact with professional artists.
"Amateurs artists give us something raw and fresh and having them meet and network with professional artists will help nurture and mold their talents so they can follow in professional artists' footsteps," she said.
"The professional artists existing now weren't always professional artists - they were given guidance by mentors and were nurtured by other artists. So we have to have this generation of artists continuously growing so our culture can continuously be defined and recognized."
After the October 12 deadline, the All-Star Amateur Artist Exhibition Night will take place Friday, October 26 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. with the work remaining on display in the Project Space of the NAGB through the weekend. The All-Star Amateur artist night ties into the NAGB motto of "It belongs to you", creating avenues for the wider Bahamian community to contribute to its growth - it is with this in mind that the NAGB looks forward to hosting more All-Star Amateur Exhibition nights in the future.
"The gallery constantly gets calls about how to get work inside the NAGB - this is that opportunity," says Benjamin. "You can submit your work, get exposed, and get recognized, and then maybe one day you will be having your solo exhibition at the National Art Gallery - but the only way to start that is to take the first step, and this is the first step in that direction."
Amateur artists can submit up to two works of art in any medium for the All-Star Exhibition in the spirit of Amos Ferguson's technique and subject matter as presented in the Bahamian Outsider exhibition at the NAGB. Works must be original and created after January 1, 2012. Artists must email photographs of each piece to be considered as well as an application form found at www.nagb.org.bs. For more information, please call 328-5800/1.
