Knowles set to lead delegation at the XIX Commonwealth Games

NEW Delhi: When the opening ceremony of the XIX Commonwealth Games is held on Sunday, boxer Valentino Knowles will be hoisting the Bahamian flag as he leads the delegation through the march past.
Knowles, who has already made history by winning three medals in the last three international events he has competed in, will be the first boxer to be given such an honour at either the Commonwealth or the Olympic Games.

NEW DELHI, India - On Thursday, half of Team Bahamas' tennis players arrived to join the contingent of track and field competitors, cyclists and boxers waiting to represent our country at the XIX Commonwealth Games.

IN just over a week, the XIX Commonwealth Games will get under way in New Delhi, India.
Each day there are more and more reports of athletes and even countries raising the alarm about not participating in the games that got started in 1930 in Hamilton, Canada.
Formerly called the "British Empire Games, the Friendly Games and British Commonwealth Games," organisers changed the games held every four years to just the Commonwealth Games in 1978 when it was held in 1978 in Edmonton, Canada.

Although some of the elite athletes have shut down their season and the four qualified swimmers opted to stay in school, the Bahamas will still be represented by a strong team at the XIX Commonwealth Games.
Yesterday at their office, the Bahamas Olympic Committee announced a 25-member team of athletes that will compete in athletics (track and field), boxing, cycling and tennis in New Delhi, India, October 3-14.
The team is scheduled to depart on Sunday, September 26, and return on Saturday, October 16.

NEW DELHI, India -- It was a touch of "royalty" for some members of Team Bahamas at the XIX Commonwealth Games as they met up close and personal with three members of the Royal British Empire.
Charles, Prince of Wales, Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall and Prince Edward, Earl of Wessex, all stopped into the games village yesterday where they took the time out to interact with members of the teams before the official opening ceremonies.

NEW DELHI, India -- On the biggest stage of his life in front of the largest crowd ever, Valentino Knowles proudly walked into the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium carrying the Bahamian flag at the opening ceremonies for the XIX 2010 Commonwealth Games.
Back at the games village, high jumper Donald Thomas and tennis players Devin Munnings and Marvin Rolle all made their entrance, albeit just hours before Rolle will have to take to the courts to compete in his first mixed doubles match today with Grand Bahamian Larikah Russell as they open competition for the Bahamas.
