On Sunday before Labor Day, September 4, 2011 noon to 11 p.m. you will mix with thousands of diverse individuals, from across the Northeast and beyond, at Pier 66 on the Hudson River, at the foot of 26th Street in Manhattan. For your enjoyment, you will experience the vibrant, warm, and exciting flavor of the Bahamian culture in food, drink, dance. drama, art and crafts, folklore, story telling, and aspects of Bahamas Junkanoo.
Besides the captivating sounds and rhythms of the Bahamian and Afro Caribbean beat and the Bahamian temperament, we offer you a gorgeous and splendid view
Hundreds turn out in New York for Bahamas Cultural Day (PHOTOS)
It was a beautiful sunny day at Pier 66 on the Hudson River in New York city this past Sunday, September 4th as hundreds came out to enjoy Bahamas Cultural Day which is presented annually by the Bahamian American Cultural Society.
The event featured Bahamian vocalist; Nita Ellis and Bahamian music, authentically Bahamian foods, 'Kalik' beer, and Bahamian prizes. The Bahamas Weekly wishes to thank Bahamian living in New York, Kyron Cooper for the myriad of photos he took to capture the half-day event.
Judo: Elaina brings home two bronze
ELAINA Cuffy led the Bahamian team to win two bronze medals - one at the Pan-American Infantile Championships and the other at the Panama Open - last weekend.
Elaina is 11 years old and fights in the +52 Kg category. She defeated the Panamanian champion with ippon (instant win) throws on the way to both victories. Her other matches were close and she narrowly missed a silver in both tournaments.
"I am very excited to begin training again," she said after her first international tournament. "We train a lot and it is fun, and I know that I won because of it."
