What is Lent

Lent is fast approaching and many Christians around the world are preparing to celebrate this special penitential occasion with reverence and fasting once again.
However, although many people go through the motions of observing this solemn season each year, many still do not know just what makes this occasion so important to the church. For many Christians the first thing that comes to mind about Lent is that it is the season for giving up some bad habit for 40 long days and nights. By NICOLE WINFIELD

Associated Press

Pope Benedict XVI has made a sweeping exoneration of the Jewish people for the death of Jesus Christ, tackling one of the most controversial issues in Christianity in a new book.

In "Jesus of Nazareth-Part II" excerpts released Wednesday, Benedict explains biblically and theologically why there is no basis in Scripture for the argument that the Jewish people as a whole were responsible for Jesus' death.

Interpretations to the contrary have been used for centuries to justify the persecution of Jews.

While the Catholic Church has for five decades taught that Jews weren't collectively responsible, Jewish scholars said Wednesday the argumen ...

Relief efforts continue in wake of fire

Many persons left homeless by a shantytown fire off of Fire Trail Road on Wednesday had up to yesterday refused to take advantage of tents erected at the Carmichael Road Evangelical Church, according to officials
Those officials said the residents failed to show up even though many of them had expressed concern about where they would sleep.
Many of the residents opted to stay with family and friends, claiming that the tents were too far away from where they once lived.
Mario Williams, a Bahamian, opened his home to at least one person who was in need.
“They have been good to me,” Williams said.
“The Haitians are good people and we need to be partners and work hand in hand ...

Christ Community Church's call to prayer

The following is a press release from Christ Community Church:
Crime and criminality, abuse and other social unrest, are we removed from such happenings? As believers we cannot truly be ‘salt’ and ‘light’ if we distance ourselves from the broader influences of society. God views us as individuals as well as a community. Hence, we are to be intentional in our commitment to praying for and on behalf of our world and local communities, our nation, our city and our people. He is calling us and is concerned about the things that concern us. Are we truly listening? His is a clarion call, “as we come to Him–seeking His face, He comes to us&ndash ...
