MP Shane Gibson's remarks on unemployment
In the Jan. 7,
2011 Nassau Guardian Newspaper article under the headline "70% Drop In
Unemployment Claims", the Minister of Labour, Dion Foulkes states that
"there is evidence that the economy is rebounding and less people are
laid off." This statement is based solely on the so-called 70% drop in
unemployment claims. This is an outrageous falsehood and gross
misleading of the Bahamian people.
As
the present policy stands, the National Insurance Board pays only 13
weeks of unemployment benefits to any eligible person. As many of the
lay offs occurred in the firsthalf of 2010, the majority of the
unemployed have exhausted their 13 weeks and are no longer eligible for
unemployment benefits, thus the drop in claims. This is coupled with the
fact that the Bahamian people are fed up with the "white wash" job that
the government is attempting to feed them and subsequently have given
up hope on finding jobs. Many unemployed persons have discontinued their
job search through government agencies simply because they have been
demoralized and feel humiliated at the blatant lies, as in this
article, which the FNM government attempts to dish out.
