Description

Even though The Bahamas did not become a member of the IAAF until 1952 and did not participate in international competition until the British Empire and Commonwealth Games in Vancouver in 1954, one Bahamian athlete loomed large in the late twenties.

At the age of 13, Charley Major joined his father in New York City. Ten years later in 1927, while a student at St Bonaventure University, Major won the high jump at the Millrose Games. His leap of 1.97m was just 1cm lower than the Millrose record.
In 1929, Major cleared a lofty 2.02m at an outdoor meeting in New York to set a Bahamian record that stood for forty years.
For his achievements, a track was named after Major at his alma mater St Bonaventure University.
