Description

Hands For Hunger was started by a group of Bahamian student leaders in early 2008, who were and still are, committed to making a difference in the world.

Our inspiration was founded on the critical realization that an incredible amount of edible food is thrown away every single day by restaurants, hotels, cruise ships, markets, bakeries and other local vendors. Meanwhile, countless people struggle to secure their next meal. We asked ourselves how we can possibly expect issues of violence, crime, poor education, unemployment and environmental ills to be eliminated, when we cannot first satisfy the most basic of human needs by guaranteeing that every citizen has food to eat.

ABOUT HANDS FOR HUNGER
Hands For Hunger is a nonprofit humanitarian organization focused on eliminating unnecessary hunger and significantly reducing food waste through the creation of meaningful and engaging partnerships formed amongst all sectors of the Bahamian community. Since 2008, we have been able to provide over 400,000 meals to Bahamians in need through our food rescue program that currently assists 18 Recipient Agencies throughout New Providence, while preventing approximately 400+ tons of CO2 emissions from entering our atmosphere.

OUR VISION
Our vision is a transformed Bahamas where everyone has access to three nutritious and fortifying meals each day. No one goes hungry. The quality of our environment is enhanced.

Since we began operations in the Spring of 2008, H4H has collected and redistributed over 250,000 lbs of food while preventing approx 400 lbs of Co2 emissions from entering our atmosphere.

WHAT WE DO?

Each day our team sets out to pick up fresh, high quality food that would otherwise go to waste. Our donors include: grocery stores, distributors, restaurants, and hotels. Hands For Hunger transports this food within hours to those who need it most - community centers, shelters, churches and soup kitchens throughout the island.

These agencies provide food to hungry children, seniors on fixed income, women seeking refuge from domestic abuse, the homeless, the disabled, psychiatric patients and many more who cannot provide for themselves.

Unlike a food bank, we focus mainly on perishable products: prepared foods, fruits, vegetables, milk, frozen foods and meat.

Hands For Hunger is a registered, not-for-profit charity (# 57211 C) that relies on donations from community groups, foundations, corporations and people like you. We are led by a volunteer Board of Directors and supported by hundreds of dedicated volunteers.
