In 1992 Discovery Learning & Development Center became a reality. A nursery and preschool which catered to children mainly in the Yellow Elder community, was the root that started this unique learning institution.
A turning point that would take D.L.D.C to another level came in 1993, as the school relocated. The relocation brought the school to its present location in the Fox Hill community. None of the Yellow Elder students were lost; they followed the school to its new location.
As the years passed many preschoolers graduated and went on to attend public and private schools throughout The Bahamas. The majority were the best and brightest at the schools they went on to attend.
With such success Mrs. Kate Williamson, principal of D.L.D.C. decided to take the school to even higher heights. The nursery which cared for many babies was closed and only the preschool remained. Prior Mrs. Williamson was already homeschooling her four biological children. With encouragement from veteran educators such as Mr. Lionel Sands, Rev, Victor Cooper, and Mrs. Verneth Patterson the homeschool began in 1998 and ever since it was in demand. People heard about it and decided to allow their children who were either in primary, junior, or senior high to attend. The student population in the homeschooling section grew rapidly and eventually it became Discovery Learning & Development Center Charter School.
The Charter School has been successful and graduated many students who went on to continue studies at the College of The Bahamas, local technical and vocational institutions and universities around the world.
Mrs. Geraldine Symonette is the longest serving teacher at D.L.D.C. and taught at the school since its inception. Mrs. Symonette?s responsibility includes preparing four and five-year-old students for primary school.
The school has been approved by the Ministry of Education and its curriculum is geared toward preparing students for the various national exams, GLAT, BJC, and BGCSE.
With a total of eighty students D.L.D.C. is fulfilling its mission of developing the ?whole man.?
