At just $299, the CP1215 is HP's most affordable color LaserJet—and it shows. This printer's slow color print speed, lack of network connectivity options, and single paper tray mark it as a decent performer that's unsuited for big workloads or medium to large businesses.

Unlike most color lasers, the CP1215's setup is relatively simple and contains a mere five steps if you include inserting paper into the lone 150-sheet paper tray. HP ships the unit with pre-installed, “introductory” toner cartridges that offer roughly half the yield of the unit's standard cartridges. The starter tanks are good for 750 pages of both color and black prints, but the standard color cartridges ($64) are good for 1,400 pages, while the black cartridge ($70) can crank out 2,300 pages.

The CP1215 has a fixed resolution of 600x600 for both grayscale and color, though HP's ImageREt (Image Resolution Enhancement Technology) interpolates that up to 2,400x600. ImageREt is always on unless you check a box labeled "print all text as black," which means there is no option for best quality or draft. In our tests, text was very sharp and easily legible all the way down to the smallest font sizes. Color accuracy was just decent, however, and we noticed that colors were generally a bit dark regardless of whether we were printing a simple graph or a photo of a butterfly.

In regard to print speeds, the CP1215 largely confirmed HP's claims for monochrome output, but we did not see the same performance when printing color documents. We were also a bit disappointed by the fact that the claimed speeds—8 pages per minute (ppm) color and 12ppm monochrome—were about half as fast as competing printers. The CP1215 finished printing our 20-page plain text file in 1 minute and 54 seconds, and it printed a 20-page Word document of monochrome text in 1 minute and 53 seconds. Things slowed down a bit when printing documents with color, however, as our 10-page file that includes a mixture of colored fonts, images, charts and text took 2 minutes to print. HP estimates the CP1215's cost per page to be 3.2 cents for black and white and 16.9 cents for color, which is a bit high, even for an entry-level printer.

Duplexing is supported but it's not automatic, so you'll have to flip the pages over yourself and re-insert them into the tray. The CP1215 features “Instant-on” technology to allow for faster startup when resuming from PowerSave mode, and our tests verified HP's claim that the unit requires 30 seconds to go from sleeping to printing, which is better than average.

Relatively small, short (15.7x17.8x10.0 inches), and light (38.9 pounds, about 15 pounds lighter than most color lasers), the CP1215 is more than adequate for home and small office use, simple flyers, marketing materials, and text documents. If your needs extend beyond the most basic printing duties, however, you'd be better off with the LaserJet 2600N, which is $100 more and offers auto-duplexing, networking capabilities, and the option of a second paper tray.
