'Celebrating 40 Years of Independence and Expression'
Bahamians have a unique way of expressing themselves, with a colorful vocabulary replete with words, idioms and adages to suit every occasion.
In 2013, as The Bahamas commemorates its 40th anniversary of independence, Colina Insurance Limited's annual calendar, "Celebrating 40 years of Independence and Expression", will celebrate Bahamian colloquialisms as a key aspect of culture.
The calendar is a fun look at "Bahamianese" interpreted and illustrated by artists affiliated with the National Art Gallery of The Bahamas (NAGB).
Colina launched the 2013 calendar on Thursday at the NAGB with a showing and silent auction of the original calendar artwork. The "Expressions" art show runs at the NAGB through January 12, 2013.
"The calendar celebrates Bahamian culture by taking the viewers on a colorful year-long journey through beautiful and entertaining renderings of our most popular idiomatic expressions," says Colina's Corporate Communications Officer Melanie Hutcheson.
"We are thrilled to have had the opportunity to work with so many talented artists on this project. Their diverse and thought-provoking interpretations of what many might consider everyday dialect make me very excited about investing in the future of the arts in The Bahamas."
"Expressions" features artwork from 13 artists based in New Providence and the Family Islands and was curated by the NAGB.
"We are thrilled to be part of this calendar project," says NAGB Director Amanda Coulson. "As incoming director, one of my main objectives is to reach out to the broader Bahamian public and put our art and culture at the forefront of public awareness.
The collaboration with Colina is a wonderful partnership that will allow the NAGB to do this."
This venture is the fifth concept calendar for Colina, and a follow-up to 2012's "Rising Young Stars of Sports", which highlighted notable young Bahamian athletes in sporting disciplines as varied as track and field, swimming, judo and equestrianism.
The company's 2011 calendar, "The Art of Charity", which featured local charitable and service organizations, raised $8,000 for charity and earned the company a Silver Quill Award in Publication Design from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC), the voice of the global communications industry.

BOB unveils new suite of Express ATM features
Bank of The Bahamas Limited (BOB) has unveiled a suite of new features for its Express ATMs, designed to make transactions easier for its customers.
BOB is the first bank to accept non-envelope cash deposits at its BOB Express ATMs.
Dominique Thompson, the bank's marketing manager, shared with Guardian Business that the bank is known for using innovative technology and delivering cutting edge services to customers. "With the non-envelope cash deposits, the machine counts the funds, which are immediately credited to your account. So that means that you have instant access to your cash. In cases of emergency, this is especially important," she said.
"These features are very important if you understand how traditional ATMs work. In the past what would happen is when you make a cash deposit in an envelope, someone would have to come and manually extract that envelope from the ATM. Then they would have to count it and then at some point later, it would be applied to your account."
In addition to non-envelope cash and check deposits, customers will be able to "load" up their prepaid cards and make credit card payments.
"It really means that you have more access to your funds. You can do more transactions and you don't have to come into the bank. You can save time and bank at your own convenience," Thompson explained.
Cash can now be inserted directly into the machines without envelopes, automatically counted by the machines and immediately credited to the customer's account making funds available to cash checks, pay bills or fulfill other financial obligations through BOB's Express ATMs.
Ian Thompson, BOB's senior marketing and sales manager, is calling the new technology "amazing" because it is fast and efficient.
"There is no time lag because non-envelope cash deposits are now credited in real time and this means our customers can do a variety of transactions at the ATM that were not previously possible. They don't have to wait for the bank to open or stand on a line. They can bank whenever it's convenient for them and enjoy immediate access to their funds. This is our goal, to make it increasingly easier for customers to transact business and that is why we have made a substantial investment in our ATMs," he said.
These new features are available at the five BOB branches that have Express ATMs: Harold Road, Carmichael Road, Village Road, Thompson Boulevard and Shirley Street.
Freedom of Expression
In a democratic society there is no greater right than the right of citizens to know what the government is doing on their behalf, which includes the right to hold opinions, to receive and express ideas and information without interference. The constitution guarantees our right to freely express ourselves by engaging in open political debate amongst ourselves as well as to engage in political discourse with our elected officials and with candidates who offer themselves for public office.
