New murder record
The morning after government and religious leaders led observances on the National Day of Prayer, the country's murder record was shattered with the shooting of three men in Over-the-Hill communities. The killings pushed the murder count so far for 2011 to 96 -- two notches above the count for the entire 2010.
A fourth man, who was shot in another incident, was in serious condition in hospital, police said.
Assistant Commissioner of Police Hulan Hanna was on the scene of the third murder on Palmetto Avenue in Coconut Grove early yesterday morning.
Hanna said there was a double murder around 4:45 a.m. in Ridgeland Park. He said when police arrived at the scene after being notified by area residents that they had heard gunshots, they met a 1990 white Maxima vehicle parked in the middle of the road with two men inside.
The passenger was shot to the back of the head and died at the scene, and the driver was taken to hospital where he died, Hanna said. He too was shot in the head.
Both men appeared to be in their early 30s and are believed to have resided in another area. Police think they were on their way to collect someone to take to work.
The third murder happened around 5 a.m. on Palmetto Avenue. Police said a man was shot and killed moments after he walked out of his girlfriend's home.
Someone shot him multiple times to the upper body, Hanna said. The man was discovered bare back and wore a pair of jeans trousers. "We cannot say the motive for this particular incident," Hanna said.
"We are following some leads and we feel encouraged in this particular one that perhaps we may be around the curve on this. We make no promises but we're going to put everything into what we have so that we can carry out an effective investigation into all of these incidents."
Regarding the other person shot earlier yesterday morning, Hanna said the man reported that while he was at home sometime after 3 a.m. on West Street someone put a chair to an opened window, stood on it and fired into the room where he was.
He was shot in the face, according to Hanna.
Police said they had no evidence to suggest the three shootings were connected. Hanna said the new murder record speaks to moral decay in The Bahamas. "For a long time we have had these challenges among our young men where basic issues among themselves, they struggle trying to deal with and this is but another chapter in the saga.
"Unfortunately for some the drama goes on. For those of us who want to build this country and want to make a difference in the country it has to alarm us."
Member of Parliament for St. Cecilia Cynthia 'Mother' Pratt, a former minister of national security, was on the scene at Palmetto Avenue not long after the murder.
Pratt -- one of few MPs who live in the area they represent -- noted that all three murders happened in her constituency. "I am concerned and troubled by it because we just had a National Day of Prayer," she said. "We are expecting great things to happen but we still can't give up. We must continue to fight."
She pointed out that several murders occurred in her constituency this year. "As a matter of fact, in the space of about four days we had three or four murders," Pratt said. "It's troubling and I know it is troubling to the Bahamian people."
Repeating a familiar line of the official opposition, Pratt said the form of Urban Renewal left in place by the Christie administration must be re-introduced.
She said that under this program there were more police patrols and people in her area felt safe. Pratt said Bahamians are looking for answers and the government must take the lead.
She said prayer is the key to addressing the crime wave, but added that there must also be strong action from authorities.

Lawyer says rush to judgment in murder case
A defense attorney yesterday suggested that crime scene officers missed "important" evidence during a murder investigation.
Geoffrey Farquharson made his assertions during the second day of testimony in the trial of Kofhe Goodman, who is accused of the murder of 11-year-old Marco Archer.
Goodman, who is also known as Edwardo Ferguson, has pleaded not guilty to the allegations that he killed Archer sometime between September 23 and 28, 2011.
His trial is before Supreme Court Justice Bernard Turner.
Sergeant James Colebrooke, the first witness called in the case, continued his testimony yesterday.
Colebrooke photographed a decomposing body that was found about 80 feet away from a Yorkshire Drive apartment around 10:30 a.m. on September 28.
During cross-examination, Colebrooke admitted that he said he wrote a report in relation to the murder of Archer after visiting the crime scene.
However, Colebrooke said to this day he did not know whose body was found at the scene.
Farquharson said, "I put it you, there was a rush to judgment in this matter. Conclusions were drawn before the evidence was reviewed."
Colebrooke replied, "I wrote a report based on my job description."
In response to questions from Farquharson, Colebrooke agreed that crime scene investigators ought to maintain an open mind as it could result in "missed evidence".
Farquharson asked Colebrooke if he collected any insect larvae to assist the pathologist in determining the time of death. Colebrooke said he did not.
Colebrooke also said he did not collect any plant material from the body to assist investigators.
Farquharson said, "This may have been important evidence."
Colebrooke replied, "The body was found in a sheet on a bunch of dried coconut leaves on the ground."
Farquharson continued: "Was any plant material present on the sheet? Is that plant material important evidence?"
Colebrooke replied, "It could have been."
Colebrooke said he did not know Archer's weight, height, clothing or shoe size.
Police found long khaki trousers, a dark Bob Marley t-shirt, a multi-colored boxer shorts and a pair of blue Nike slippers inside a white garbage bag in a garbage bin in front of the apartment complex.
Colebrooke said he did not photograph the inside of a suitcase that was found on top of the corpse.
Colebrooke said he was not aware that Sgt. Esther Miller had visited the apartment and documented the premises a few weeks earlier.
Farquharson said it would be ridiculous for someone to "be hiding bodies in the back of the yard" after you'd just had your house searched.
Garvin Gaskin, the deputy director of public prosecutions, Neil Brathwaite, the assistant director of public prosecutions, and Darell Taylor appear for the Crown.
The trial continues today.

Four weekend armed robberies are investigated

He got away with an amoun ...
Who killed office etiquette
Ladies and gentlemen, office etiquette is dead!
It has been brutally assassinated by uncouth employees, who remain at large and continue to practice their uncultured behavior in the office. Why have they not been arrested? According to reliable sources several theories have been presented:
1. Many civility police (managers) lack business etiquette training and therefore are unable to identify and correct simple etiquette faux pas.
2. Organizations have hired so many uncouth employees that policing has become virtually impossible.
3. Many civility police (managers) are also uncouth, so they see nothing wrong when employees' social graces are less than desirable.
4. Many civility police are afraid to have the tough conversations required to address the inappropriate behavior.
In light of the above I am appealing to all employees who are concerned about the deteriorating state of common civility in the workplace, to stand with me in exposing these uncouth perpetrators. I hereby deputize you and order you to arrest on sight any co-worker who you witness engaged in one of the following acts:
1. Misusing the speakerphone: Speakerphones are used primarily for group conference calls, not because you are too lazy to pick up the handset. If you intend to put someone on a speakerphone, make your intent known and identify any other person who may be in the room with you. For example, "Bob I have you on the speaker and I've got Tom and Jerry here with me".
2. Engaging in loud conversations: If a colleague is engaged in a conversation with another individual and you can hear them down the hall, this is a clear indication that they need to turn down the volume.
3. Eating smelly foods at his/her desk: Not only does it look bad, certain foods like fish, onions, curry, Chinese food etc. have high aromas that can leave the entire office smelling bad! What can I tell you, eat in the kitchen and if your office doesn't have a kitchen choose your food selections wisely! On the same note please refrain from throwing smelly foods in the garbage at your desk, take them to the kitchen garbage please.
4. Not cleaning up after themselves: What's wrong with you people? Does you mother work here? Did your bring your housekeeper or private butler with you to work? Is something wrong with your hands? Why can't you clean up after yourself? Why do you believe that someone should throw away your discarded lunch, cups or beverages? Does your kitchen at work come with a waitress? If you sprinkle when you tinkle will it kill you to wipe the seat? Why can't you flush the toilet after yourself? Is it beneath you to ensure that the toilet is clean for other people to use? OMG, uncivilized!
5. Constantly talking on his or her personal cellphone: And not just talking, talking loudly since most peoples' cell phone voice is considerably louder than their regular voice. Then you have the nerve to wonder who is spreading your person business and supposedly confidential information around the office. Newsflash, you are, and don't expect people not to listen!
6. Grooming in public: This includes brushing and combing hair, applying makeup at your desk, and zipping down your trousers to put shirt in pants. Please find the restroom.
7. Not sending a proper email: When are you going to "get it"? An email is nothing more than an electronic letter. As such it should contain a subject, greeting and salutation. It also wouldn't hurt if you remember to use spell check and proof your messages for grammatical errors before hitting send. Note to self, never respond to an email when you are angry. Trust me, you will regret it! And please do not forward chain mails.
8. Not saying "good morning", "please" or "thank you": We were taught basic manners as a child (well at least I was) so in my mind there is just no excuse for lack of good manners. Get it in your head, "please" and "thank you" will always be the magic words we were taught as children, some of you just need to remember to use them.
9. Playing music/the radio at your desk: This is soooooo annoying! Why do you believe that your colleagues want to listen to your favorite radio station, CD, sermon, or ITunes library (you get the picture)? Further, if the company wanted you to listen to music, it would install a sound system! If you must listen to any of the above please use headphones.
10. Voicemails: A voicemail system allows people to leave messages for you when you are unavailable, but how can they leave a message if:
a. You don't activate your voicemail/mailbox.
b. Your mailbox is full and unable to receive any more messages.
Listen people, clear your messages and return your calls same day if possible, if not before end of next day.
