Rock the pink
The philosophy is simple -- one day, one cause, one cure -- but BAF Financial Insurance and Bahamas Ltd. wants to make an even more powerful statement for the important cause. That one day has been expanded to four Fridays as people around The Bahamas rock the pink for the cure during the month of October for the 14th year.
Each Friday over the next four weeks will have significant meaning to the employees and students who have elected to join millions of people around the world by participating in the fight against breast cancer.
"There was this big push and this big rush for that one Friday and it came and went so quickly ... but with the whole month being Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we thought why only recognize one day? We asked companies and schools if they would let their staff and students wear their shirts and denim to work each Friday during the month of October," said Cecilia Cooper, BAF's Denim Day coordinator.
With more than 25,000 shirts ordered, the "sea of pink" that they hope is across the country will seem more like a reality this year than in previous years.
"Truthfully, this year is probably the biggest ever, and we're doing it with a new design -- from round neck T shirts, to v-neck T shirts and golf shirts, which means more of the men have come on board."
Cooper believes more people opted to show their support and wear pink and denim for the cure, because cancer is now touching more people, and most people know someone who has suffered with cancer, whether they're a family member or a friend. The disease touched home for BAF this year as one of their employees, Cassandra Lewis-Moore is a breast cancer survivor.
"Someone knows at least one person who has suffered with it. Back in the day cancer was something nobody talked about, but now people are talking about it, so we feel we're getting out there along with other people like the Cancer Society of the Bahamas. But this initiative that we started 14 years ago has taken root and is now all over ..." says Cooper.
Organizations like Scotiabank, Nassau Airport Development (NAD), Taylor's Industries, Commonwealth Bank, Nassau Underwriters, Lyford Cay School and Summit Academy have always been supporters of denim day for years and shown their support. And Cooper says this year will be no different. She says the employees and students will all be sporting their pink for the cure.
"You don't expect breast cancer to happen, but it does. And when it's one of your own, in the case of Cassandra, one of our employees, we had to celebrate her this year. Our theme is wear pink for the cure, as it's a celebration not about gloom and doom. And BAF is proud to be spearheading this event as always as it's something that's very dear to us and it's something that we will continue to do as long as we can. And we thank our corporate partners and volunteers who help to make this month a success. And we thank the people that are doing their own thing in the fight against breast cancer."
Along with the various styled shirts, which ranged from $10 for children, $12 for adults and $22 for golf shirts, BAF Financial also sells pink bands for $3, car magnets for $6 and squeeze bottles for $5. The proceeds are donated to the Breast Cancer Society and Sister Sister Cancer Support Group.
