Dilemma faced by pro boxing (I)

The simmering issue in Bahamian professional boxing has exploded. A Nassau Guardian lead sports article on Wednesday clearly indicated the impasse between local fighters and promoters, in this particular case, Charlie Major Jr.
Last month (August 13) Major Jr. received a last-minute conditional sanction by the Bahamas Boxing Commission to stage a show at the Nassau Stadium. There were a number of issues that concerned the Commission, in particular, that all funds owed would be paid.
Finally, satisfied that there was an appropriate understanding between boxers/their representatives and Major Jr., the Commission made a decision to let the show go on. It is clear that certain matters have not been resolved to the satisfaction of some boxers who were engaged for the event.
The result was the blistering attack on Major Jr. by two boxers, through The Guardian's story.
The situation highlights the dilemma faced by professional boxing in the country. The many instances of the Commission's flexible position in order to encourage promoters and at the same time to seek to protect the interest of boxers are documented.
Major Jr. is the present issue, but the Commission also has outstanding matters to address with former promoter Michelle Minus. It was just a matter of time before the issues that were talked about within the pro boxing circles surfaced in the media.
The Commission is faced with a dilemma, a difficult task. Its mandate from the Government of The Bahamas is to ensure the rules and regulations set out in the legislated Act are adhered to. The Commission, however, has the authority always to use its discretion and waive rules in certain instances.
In a small nation like The Bahamas with limited quality performers in certain sporting disciplines, compromises must be made in some cases to enable the development process to continue, thus the flexibility demonstrated by the Commission at times.
It will be very difficult to make an argument that boxers are not justified to seek the full compensation agreed to. In this regard, the Commission has an obligation to do whatever it can to assist the boxers.
It's a delicate climate, however. For this reason, promoters are urged always to have an awareness of the purses that the international, regional and local boxing markets demand.
If a promoter goes out on a limb and signs contracts to pay sums that are above market range, the problem of tardy payment or non-payment would result.
Hopefully, promoter Major Jr. can bridge the gap with the boxers he signed up for the show last month. All parties are important to the furtherance of a vibrant pro boxing program.
A sit-down between the Commission, Major Jr. and the unhappy boxers is in order.

Stingrays stopped Pros at the line of scrimmage

A 30-yard touchdown run, with less than three minutes to go became the game 'spoiler' for the veteran football team, the Orry J. Sands Pros, who were trying to 'milk the clock' and capture their eighth Boil Fish Bowl title in the Commonwealth American Football League (CAFL).
The game winning play was trigged by V8 Fusion Stingrays' George Daxon's deflection on fourth down. Daxon recovered, after slipping, in the nick of time to swat the airbound pass to the ground. Down four points, the Pros tried to make a last minute charge up the field before the deflection. But the pennant winning team were not about to let go that easily. The 30-yard run by Jamaal Storr, the league's leader in rushing for the second consecutive year followed, giving the Stingrays a 24-14 win.
"When they went ahead we started to hang our heads a bit like we expected them to comeback," said Storr. "It happened to us before, against this team and our body language looked like we expected it to happen again. But I know this game meant to much to my team and too much to me, so I knew I would have to make a play. It's been a long time coming, we worked hard for this, we worked years for this and it feels good to finally reach the top of the league and to beat this team to do it."
The Stingrays took to the field to prove to the Pros and other football fans that they are not a one dimensional squad. Their defense put up some hard hitting tackles, forcing three turnovers. The special team, led by Ishmail Sutherland was also on point. Sutherland would put the first score up on the board for the Stingrays with a 60-yard touchdown punt return.
The Pros' defensive line had little time to rest in the first half. And the Stingrays offense was not the only line putting a beating on the them. Their own offensive side were putting them to work as well. Quarterback Mike Foster's pass to Charlie Edwards was picked off by Daxon, forcing the line to return to the field quicker than expected.
Once again the Stingrays proved that they had more than a rushing game. Storr ran for five on the first attempt and then rushed for another three on second down. The short slant pass to Nesley Lucien was stopped at the line of scrimmage, forcing the team's quarterback to send his players deep, in hopes of picking up the first down.
The in-and-out was the break the Pros needed.
It was a new Pros' team when they returned to the field to start the second half. The team rushed their way back into the game, capitalizing off a turnover. The interception by Recarno Nixon started their longest drive, which was completed with a short touchdown run by Elvardo Carey. The pass to Phillip Moxey from Foster, for the two-point conversion, pulled the Pros within four, 12-8.
Foster was not done though. For the first time in the game the Pros' offensive line put strong blocks up which gave Foster enough time to look down the field. The complete pass would put the Pros in redzone. Foster opted for the quarterback sneak, which was ruled good after a long controversial debate. The Pros were now up by two.
In true championship strides, the Stingrays put together a series of plays that moved the chains. Head coach Lawrence Hepburn said it was the determination of the team that helped, especially when their backs were against the wall.
"It is indeed a good win for us, a long time coming victory," he said. "We remained calm and focused on the goal. After they scored we came together and decided that, that was enough. We had a chant 'who let the dogs out' to motivate us. Our defense went out there after that and went to work. The offense played exceptionally well and I must give the special teams credit.
"We played as team and that's what count. We came together for the win. I am sure that they can now see that we are not a one dimensional team. We are a complete team."
Storr was named Most Valuable Player of the game. He and Lucien were awarded the offensive players while Nixon and Shannon Thompson captured the defensive players awards.
