Plasma rocket may shorten space voyages
An innovative plasma rocket being built as a spare for one heading to the International Space Station may have a space mission of its own: visiting an asteroid.
'Peace on da Streets' grows over the years
There has been an increase in the number of teams participating in this year's Nelson Cooper "Peace on da Streets" Basketball Classic.
Teams are expected from Freeport, Grand Bahama, and various communities in New Providence. A number of collegiate players have also signed on to play in the tournament that will be held July 11-14 at the Sir Kendal GL Isaacs gymnasium. The basketball classic was formerly called the National Park League Championships before it was renamed after Nelson Cooper, in 1996. The first tournament tipped off 17 years ago.
"Nelson gave his life to the Lord and went into Mason's Addition community to encourage other gang members to stop the violence," recalled tournament organizer Carlos Reid. "He was shot the night he entered that same community and died a few weeks later. This basketball tournament is an effort to continue the work of Nelson Cooper and Youth Against Violence to help keep our youth off the streets.
"So far for 2012 there have been over 66 reported murders which is 20 more than we had at this same time last year. Last year we set a record with 127. While we don't want to magnify the problem, we also don't want to minimize the fact that we are experiencing an epidemic as it relates to crime and violence. Youth Against Violence is committed to fighting this scourge. We will continue to provide positive alternatives and solutions to the youth of this nation. We refuse to sit on the sidelines and hope that it will get better because the reality is that it won't get better until every law abiding, and sensible, citizen makes up their mind to become a solution rather than a problem."
Teams are registered in the five divisions inclusive of the 13 and under, 16 and under, 19 and under, church play and an open division. Phil's Food Services will sponsor this year's Slam Dunk contest which will feature 'Werm' from Fort Lauderdale, 'Airdogg' from California and Bahamian Corey 'Out of the Building' Walkes.
The first place prize in the slam dunk contest is $1,000 and a 42 inch plasma television. The runner-up will get $500 and a 32 inch plasma television, while the third place contestant will receive $300 and Blackberry cellphone.
All awards were courtesy of Phil's Food Services. The contest will be held on Saturday, July 14, after the 3-point shoot out.
Reid said: "The celebrity game will again feature members of Parliament playing against some of our pastors. The pastors won this game for the past three years but the politicians say that with the new generation politicians they have this year, they are guaranteeing a win. Our classic has become the most highly anticipated summer event in New Providence, and over the past several years, we have attracted some college coaches from the U.S. who come down with the hopes of offering scholarships to some of our young players."
Reid thanked all for their support over the years. Some sponsors of the event includes Furniture Plus, the Ministry of Youth, Sports and Culture, Phil's Food Service, Thompson Trading, Original Patties, First Caribbean Bank, JMEL, BTC, Royal Star Assurance and Fidelity Bank and Family Guardian.

Sandals opens 17M Balmoral Tower in Nassau
Sandals Resorts is thrilled to announce the reopening of the newly-renamed Balmoral Tower at Sandals Royal Bahamian Spa Resort & Offshore Island.
After undergoing recent renovations, the Balmoral Tower now features a lighter, contemporary look and even more luxury. This $17 million upgrade helps maintain Sandals Resorts' high end 'Luxury Included' standard, in which guests are provided with the highest-quality amenities, and steps are taken to ensuring they have the best possible experience.
Patrick Drake, general manager at Sandals Royal Bahamian, said, " I am extremely proud to be opening on time and with such a stunning resort. The splendor of the original Manor Building has been preserved and with the new renovation it has evolved in to an even more regal offering for our guests. The feedback so far from our guests has been phenomenal, we have many returning guests who were excited to see the developments and have been 'wowed' by the new look.
"Over the next few weeks we will complete the first and second floors as well as the renovation of our third on-property spa. The rooms and suites in Balmoral Tower now boast travertine-style, oversized rectangle tiling instead of carpet, mahogany entertainment units with a 42-inch plasma television, a bar area and refrigerator, neutral draperies with open-weave sheers, and gorgeous large-scale area rugs featuring teal, charcoal and amber accents."
Drake continued: "The renovated bathrooms include contemporary, stained mahogany his and her vanities with Carrera marble tops, backlit mirrors and showers that feature white beveled subway tiles with blue, cream and amber glass accent tiles. The most exciting feature is sure to be the large balconies that were added to 35 of the ocean view rooms. An additional 11 ground-floor rooms have now become walk-out rooms, providing direct access onto the newly-finished white concrete pool deck, which incorporates local fauna and conch shells. Beachfront fire pits and an expanded lounge area complete the Balmoral Tower's new look. The renovations have created an excitement in the market place amongst trade and guests and we are positive that we will continue with the strong start we have had to 2012", Drake noted.
Liver diseases interfere with its normal functions
THIS refers to the diseases or conditions that interfere with any of the liver's normal functions.
The liver is a large organ located in the most forward part of the abdomen, resting against the muscular portion (the diaphragm) between the abdomen and chest cavities. The liver is essential for life and performs over 100 important functions, such as detoxifying poisons, and drugs, metabolising fats, storing carbohydrates, manufacturing bile, plasma proteins and other substances, and assisting in blood clotting. The liver is essentially an organic filter that removes waste and detoxifies drugs and poison, and acts as a factory that manufactures and processes nutrients and enzymes.

If you need an upgrade, do it smart
It's that time of year again when we expect lots of visits from family and friends as we approach the holiday season.
This is typically a time when we like to update our furniture and appliances because, you know, we want to impress that aunt or uncle we don't especially like. If you're on the hunt for that new appliance, I thought I would share some purchasing tips so you don't hurt yourself in the process.
In looking at washing machines, those that earn the ENERGY STAR rating are predicted to use 50 percent less water and 30 percent less energy than other models. These are typically seen in high efficient front or top loading models that no longer have central agitators.
Rinsing is now achieved using a high pressure spray which eliminates the need to fill and drain the tub.
Additionally, high speed spin options reduce drying time and as a result energy use. Just in case you are wondering, ENERGY STAR does not label clothes dryers as it has found very little difference in energy use amongst different models, so you would have to achieve your energy reductions in the washing process.
You may want to ensure your refrigerator is qualified, as these models are expected to be 20 percent more energy efficient than other models. Improve performance by leaving space at the back of the appliance to allow it to breathe, keep it away from heat producers like stoves and use energy saving or economy settings.
For those buying dishwashers, a 10 percent energy saving is predicted as these more efficient models have increased water pressure to reduce the need for pre-rinsing.
Some even have soil sensors to predict the wash cycle needed and have internal water heaters that reduce water heating costs.
Window or wall unit air-conditioning units that have achieved this rating are also expected to use 10 percent less energy than comparable models. You may wish to look at models that are equipped with timers to automatically shut units off when not needed.
Ceiling fans equipped with lights which have achieved this rating are 50 percent more efficient than other models and the light kits are expected to produce 75 percent less heat. These fans should be hung at least eight feet from the floor and of course only used when the room is occupied as contrary to popular belief fans do not cool a room.
They work by making persons in the room feel cooler. A qualified fan would work with compact fluorescent bulbs that last at least 10 times longer than incandescent bulbs.
Whether you are looking for a plasma, LCD, HD ready TV or a standard model television all types have been compared and you can find a qualified model. It is worth the effort because rated models are on average 40 percent more efficient than other models. This is typically an appliance that spends a significant amount of time in standby mode so you want to check the consumption in this mode which should be no more than one Watt.
At the moment there is no rating for ovens, ranges or microwave ovens.
I know you may want to purchase items just because they are on sale, but do your homework before shopping to avoid the impulse buy.
By making the effort to compare the predicted consumption of appliances at full power and standby you can save yourself a lot of money in the long run as the product with the lower sticker price may be more costly over the product lifetime.
Challenge for this week: Be an informed consumer and research before you shop for appliances. Take energy savings into account.
We would like to hear how this article has helped you. Send questions or comments to sbrown@graphitebahamas.com

Christmas Comes Early for Audrey Deveaux
Lady Luck smiled on Audrey Deveaux as Coca Cola awarded her one of six 50 inch HD plasma televisions, at Solomon’s Super Centre this past Saturday. “I just followed my routine. I buy my six packs every week,” expressed Ms. Deveaux “I still can’t believe I won!”
A Night of Love
He's the crooner who has dropped hits like "The No Disturb Sign", "She Loves Me Now", "Rockaway" and "Sweet Lies" and he's back in town this weekend headlining the 25th annual Above the Rim Productions concert dubbed "A Night of Love".
Beres Hammond brings his famous soulful voice and lover's rock reggae style to the stage at the Wyndham Crystal Palace Hotel, and while he won't leave you speechless, because the crowd will definitely be singing along, they will be in awe. Coupled with R&B dynamo Joe and modern reggae legends like Grammy-award winning artist Beenie Man and Peetah and Gramps Morgan of Morgan Heritage, the "Night of Love" lineup is almost too hot to handle.
The concert rocks out for one night on Saturday, November 19, but tonight, a pre-party celebration jump starts the event at Mario's Bowling and Family Entertainment Palace at 8 p.m. with a mix of music from past "Night of Love" performers over the years, at an event that has been themed "A Night of Love: The Reunion Pre-party".
Old favorites like T.O.K., Red Rat, Mr. Lexxus, Notch and Tanto Metro & Devonte will "fan the flames" in preparation for Saturday's main event.
Added to the line-up this year are inspirational artists Landlord and Najie Dunn who both will bring the special element that defines this highly anticipated concert.
This concert is going to be one for the record books according to Charlotte "CeCe" Mitchell, public relations manager for Above the Rim Productions. She hopes that while people have a good time listening to the artists they also take heed of the message of love they will be sharing.
"I really hope people come out to have fun but I also hope they listen to the artists and understand the love and message of peace they are sharing," said Mitchell. "We also made an effort to put on events that would mean something, especially as it relates to what is happening in society [and] this is a perfect time to share the love."
A few changes to the concert hall layout have eliminated the general admission section, which means everyone will have a great view of the stage.
Organizers have also added more elements to the evening. Everyone has access to the lounge where there are sofas available and multiple bars. VIP and platinum ticket holders have more access to most things, and the double platinum ticket holders have even more privileges, including their own bar and raised seating near the stage. Plasma televisions showing the concert will be set up in the lounge, bar areas and even the bathrooms because they don't want patrons to miss a moment of the performances.
Tickets for the pre-party at are $25. Tickets for the concert are $50 VIP, $100 platinum and $200 double platinum, and can be purchased at Airbrush Junkies, Obsession Designs, the Reef Restaurant and Alpha Sounds.
