Independent consultancy should check which restaurants are really four-five star
EDITOR, The Tribune.
Which restaurant is really four-five star?
With the change in policy over foreign ownership I hope the Ministry of Tourism will contract an International Classification Consultancy to check and report independently for everyone which of our restaurants is one-star, two-star, three-star, four-star, five-star. I say without too much trouble we might have three might be four restaurants that would qualify for the top classification.
Most of our restaurants claim four-five-six star and charge four-five-six star prices but that's all it is. You know the second they open they are Internationally known and "famous"!
Now let's have our restaurants checke ...
Restaurant bowling challenge begins at Mario's
Can one say that food is synonymous with fun? Absolutely, especially if you are referring to Mario's Bowling & Family Entertainment Palace's much anticipated Restaurant Bowling Challenge.
The Restaurant Bowling Challenge, as it has been coined, is Mario's Bowling & Family Entertainment Palace's most recent attempt to increase interest in the sport of bowling here in The Bahamas. The entire event, scheduled to run for four months from March to June 2013, began its first four-week round on Monday.
Luciano's of Chicago, Bahamas Subs & Salads, Anthony's Grill, Van Breugels and Dunkin Donuts will square off each Monday evening at the bowling facility in friendly matches. Divided into three rounds, each for the duration of four weeks, the event will feature novice bowlers from the country's leading restaurants and fast-food chains. The final championship rounds will take place in the month of June 2013.
On Monday past, five bowlers from each team represented their restaurant, and they will continue each Monday evening with a sixth person serving as an alternate. One team will advance from each of the three rounds of challenge to complete for the floating trophy and overall bragging rights.
The purpose of the bowling challenge, as explained by Lisa Humes, organizer of the first ever Bowling Restaurant Challenge in The Bahamas, is "to give bowlers who share a common ground an opportunity to come together in a unique, friendly and competitive environment. Our goal is to take 'the challenge' to the next step and create a league of restaurateurs and fast food employees who come in one night a week to bowl, exercise and socialize, further expanding bowling in The Bahamas. It is hoped that the teams will foster true camaraderie amongst the various restaurants."
"Mario's Bowling is ecstatic over the overwhelming acceptance and support we have received from the various restaurants and fast food places lined up to enter the challenge. In order to accommodate the interested establishments, what started out as a four-week challenge has evolved into four, four-week challenges and a bowl off to decide the overall winner of the bowling challenge."
Each registered team will receive team shirts, team identification cards, Mario's bowling membership cards, Mario's bowling branded paraphernalia, and discounted coupons on food and drinks. Restaurants and fast food establishments interested in joining the Restaurant Bowling Challenge are still able to do so by contacting Mario's Bowling & Family Entertainment Palace at 326-8010 or by email to marketing@mariosbowling.com.
Restaurants serve up dozens of jobs in GB
Several new restaurants are scheduled to open in the Port Lucaya Marketplace (PLM) in the coming months, serving up dozens of jobs and a much-needed economic surge for Grand Bahama.
Bourbon Street Limited, owner of PLM, has announced the opening of Molly Malone's and Bateman's Big Easy Daiquiri Bar and Restaurant Café.
Molly Malone's is an Irish-inspired restaurant owned by Bahamian resident Yvonne Morris and her husband James.
"This native of Belfast Northern Ireland and resident of The Bahamas promises that Molly Malone's Irish Pub will be serving traditional Irish dishes and beverages. Molly Malone's Irish Pub's atmosphere sells itself as a lively place for Irish music, great food, moderately priced, cold beverages and engaging conversation. Patrons will also be able to take home mementos like T-shirts, sweatshirts and coffee mugs as well as other logo items," according to Karen Ferguson-Bain, PLM's entertainment and marketing coordinator.
Meanwhile, a restaurant themed after New Orleans and Mardi Gras will open right next door.
Bateman's Big Easy Daiquiri Bar and Restaurant Café, Ferguson-Bain said, will offer a blend of fresh fruits, daiquiris and smoothies, such as Bahamian sour sop, guinep, sapodilla, mango, banana and tamarind.
"The motto of the restaurant will be 'yes is the answer', as we strive for exemplary customer satisfaction. Bateman's Big Easy Daiquiri Bar and Restaurant Café is a must for daiquiri lovers, seafood lovers and those desirous of experiencing the creole/Cajun flavor of New Orleans. Regular bar beverages will also be available," said Bateman Smith, the owner.
The former Shenanigans venue will be split to accommodate Molly Malone's and Bateman's Big Easy Daiquiri Bar and Restaurant Café.
A new Caribbean/Bahamian restaurant tenant has also been secured to replace Caribbean Café.
John Swain, president of the Grand Bahama Chamber of Commerce (GBCC), told Guardian Business that he welcomes these new additions to the PLM. The restaurants, he said, will no doubt bring a much-needed boost to the economy.
The Department of Statistics estimates that Grand Bahama has a unemployment rate of 21 percent.
"With any addition like that, it definitely is a boost to the Grand Bahama economy and these eateries will create new employment. There are many Grand Bahamians that are in desperate need of jobs at this time. The economy is now beginning to turn around," he added.
Pizza Hut is also scheduled to open its doors soon, marking its second location on the island, and replaces Pussers Pub.
"We encourage you to pull up a chair and bon appetite, Port Lucaya Marketplace, where we have it all!" Karen Ferguson-Bain shared.

Seventy-eight workers will be out of a job after three Grand Bahama restaurants close their doors for business because the owner of the eateries could not reach a reasonable agreement with the former tenant, citing a$30,000 monthly rent charge.
La Dolce Vita, The Pub at Port Lucaya and East restaurants will no longer be serving Grand Bahama customers after the tenant, President of LDV Limited Richard Hayward, announced that the cuisines will be discontinuing operation effective immediately.
The closure marks another blow to the struggling Grand Bahama economy, which never fully recovered from the devastation of the 2004 hurricanes ...

Rick Hayward announces his 3 Port Lucaya restaurants closed due to eviction
Freeport, Bahamas - Richard A. Hayward,
President of LDV Ltd., today announced that effective immediately, La
Dolce Vita, The Pub at Port Lucaya and East restaurants will cease operations
due to being evicted by the Landlord, Bourbon Street Limited.
This follows a protracted
dialogue with its Landlord, Bourbon Street Limited, to re-negotiate
the rent for the three premises. Earlier in June, a press release
was issued by the Port Group Ltd. stating that Mr. Hayward had until
September 30 to hand over the premises. At one point it seemed likely
that The Port Group Limited would forgive all debts by having LDV Ltd.
turn over the East restaurant to them, but allowing the company to keep
La Dolce Vita and the Pub at Port Lucaya in operation, with a commitment
to inject another $250,000 to complete the renovation of the Pub. It is
understood that Sir Jack A. Hayward agreed to this, however,
arrangements
to implement the provisions of the agreement stalled.
At the root of the
dispute is LDV's claim that they have been subjected to an unfair...
