Shakespeare In Paradise Lion City Live

Shakespeare In Paradise Lion City Live

Tuesday 9th October 2012  8:00 PM

Shakespeare In Paradise is pleased to announce the first two productions for its fourth annual Theatre Festival, Opening October 5th and running through October 13th, 2012. Lion City Live Trinidad and Tobago celebrated their 50th Anniversary of Independence this year, and Shakespeare in Paradise wanted to celebrate with them. So an invitation was sent to Muhammad Muwakil and Lou Lyons who form the group Freetown and they graciously accepted. The following dates and times: Tuesday, October 9th – 8:00pm – Hillside House Thursday, October 11th – 8:00pm – Hillside House Saturday, October 13th – 8:00pm – Nirvana Calender:

Here’s what they say about themselves: Freetown is a resurgence of music and philosophy. From the firm groundations of Rastafari and Islam, born on the diverse island of Trinidad come forward two young men carrying the banner flag of a generation yet to properly define itself. Philosophers at heart, poets and musicians, the concept of Freetown follows on the concept of the personal burden of each individual to create a Free Town in his or her mind firstly, once free one can free others, in essence to create a free town out of every single individual we encounter on this journey. Since their journey began, the brothers have been to London, Guyana, Grenada and Cuba and have received national songwriting awards in Trinidad. Currently they are working on their first album which is also the soundtrack for a movie being shot by the Blue Cinamon Group out of Los Angeles called God Loves the Fighter. Our signature Bahamian production is An Evening of Two One-Acts by Jeanne Thompson. The renowned author of The Fergusons of Farm Road and numerous plays for the stage returns with a new play, Back of the Moon, set in the New Providence of the 1950s, that heady era leading up to majority rule. A feisty domestic servant accuses her boss, a white English minister of religion, of fathering her child, and attempts to enlist the middle class black community to back her in her cause. The play is a window into a bygone Bahamian era. Father’s Day, Thompson’s classic study of a Bahamian man navigating his relationships with his wife and two sweethearts, rounds out the evening. Shakespeare In Paradise will also salute our Caribbean neighbours Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago on their 50th anniversary of Independence, and will offer a work from each nation. Other local works are also in development, including an exciting historical docudrama. You can expect to hear a lot more from us as we announce audition dates for all of the shows being directed by Shakespeare In Paradise directors and we will let you know how you can become involved in the festival, either as a performer, a backstage worker, front of house or many of the other areas where volunteers would be needed throughout the festival. Judgement in Paradise

Judgement in Paradise

Saturday 26th May 2012  7:00 PM

Judgement in Paradise A live stage play by Adrian WildGoose "Is the end near?" find out... May 25th & 26th, 2012 @ & 7:30pm The College Of The Bahamas performing arts centre $20 in advance. $25 at door (seats are limited) contacts: (242) 522-6820 Email: awildgoose@gmail.com Synopsis Set in a fictional Bahamas, “Judgment in Paradise” tells the story of a families experience leading up to the Mayan predicted end of The Bahamas on December 21, 2012. Although the main plot focuses on the Willshine family, the audience is given a peak into the desperate sphere of Bahamian politics, religion as salvation, and the perceived ethos of the average Bahamian. Life and existence as Bahamians know it hangs in the balance as foreign investment, familial ties and social constructs clash to provide a thrilling experience that interrogates Bahamian lived experience. 24 year old Destiny Willshine competes with every other citizen for her father’s attention and consideration. Visually impaired from a very young age she proves that having physical sight does not translate into wisdom and reasoning. Destiny’s father, Christian Willshine is one of the leading protagonists as he establishes the corrupting and blinding influence of power and selfish desire. Representative of the moral and value system of times past, Grandpa Willshine, who is also the Reverend at End Times Ministries, portray the changed Bahamian lived experience through his interaction with Destiny, Christian and Chance. The youth living in ‘Paradise’, Chance and Shanice, critique the traditional Bahamian roles of young men and women operating in a world of partying and drugs, they seem detached from the reality. The title of the play spells doom, not for the world, but The Bahamas. Priorities are questioned, relationships destroyed, countries are sold and The Bahamas is sinking. ‘Judgement’ is abounding. A critical play that forces an analysis of the realities Bahamians live daily. NOTE: This play is something that you do not want to miss. Mark the date May 25 & 26, 2012 on your calendar. The play will be staged at the College of the Bahamas’ Performing Arts Center. Stay tuned for ticket and other information. COMING SOON, if the end doesn’t happen before then!
