After opening the 2011-2012 with Dmitri Berlinsky (violin) and Elena Baksht (piano), the Nassau Music Society announces the second event of the year on Friday, November 4th at 8pm at the Performing Arts Centre of the College of The Bahamas and on Saturday, November 5th at 7:30 pm at St. Paul's Church Hall, Lyford Cay featuring Terry Waldo.
Terry is often considered the living link to the ragtime and jazz masters of the past. He is the protégé of the late Eubie Blake, and he also studied and performed with many of the early jazz masters in New Orleans and the West Coast revival legends such as Turk Murphy. He is recognizes as not only a virtuoso ragtime, stride and blues pianist but also a vocalist, an arranger, a comedian—famous for his dry wit—and leader of many highly regarded musical groups. He is a composer not only of rags and show tunes, but of movie and TV scores as well.
The Society's goal this Season is to increase the numbers of persons attending the concerts and spread the appreciation of all types of music. They encourage all to promote their concerts with friends and families so more persons can be exposed to beautiful music.

The Nassau Music Society continues its 2011-2012 Season with two evenings of classical guitar featuring Marco Tamayo and Anabel Montesinos, well-known, young musicians in the world of classical guitar. These concerts take place Friday, January 27th, 2012 at 8pm at The Bahamas Historical Society on Shirley St. & Elizabeth Avenue and on Sunday, January 29th, 2012 at 5:30pm at St. Paul's Church Hall in Lyford Cay. These concerts are under the patronage of His Excellency Sir Arthur Foulkes, Governor General of The Bahamas and are sponsored by Société Générale Private Banking, Pictet, Royal Star Assurance and Colina Insurance Limited.
Winner of major International Guitar Competitions such as the Michele Pittaluga Intl. Guitar Competition in 1999 and the Andrés Segovia Intl. Guitar Competition in Granada, Spain, Marco Tamayo performed concerts with the Chamber Orchestra of St. Petersburg, the Philarmonic of Torino under the baton of Paolo Ferrara, the Chamber Orchestra of Aix-en-Provence (France), under the baton of Philip Bender, the Philarmonic of Tampere (Finland), the Philarmonic of La Habana under the baton of Leo Brouwer and the TransArt Orchestra of Salzburg conducted by Kurt Redel.
Anabel Montesinos, one of the most important personalities in the world of classical guitar, was described as a "promising star of the classical guitar" by Antón García Abril, after he heard her play at the age of fifteen. She is the winner of several international competitions such as the renowned "Francisco Tarrega" competition in Spain or the "Michele Pittaluga" in Italy. Her musical style, taste and choices of interpretation have charmed the audience at each performance.
Both musicians are expected to hold a Master Class for classical guitarists. The date, time and venue will be announced shortly. The College of The Bahamas School of English Studies invites you to an evening of poetry with Miss Sonia Farmer, the 2011 Winner of the Small Axe Literary Prize for Poetry. Distinguished Bahamian poets Philip Armbrister and Janice Lynn, whose work made the shortlist of the same award, will also be presenting their poetry.
The reading will take place upstairs at Chapter One Bookstore on Thompson Blvd. in the Michael H. Eldon Complex of The College of The Bahamas on Thursday, March 8th, 2012 at 6pm.
Small Axe: A Caribbean Journal of Criticism is a publication of Duke University Press and is published three times a year. it focuses on publishing critical work that examines the ideas that guided the formation of Caribbean modernities. It mainly includes scholarly articles, opinion essays, and interviews, but it also includes literary works of fiction and poetry, visual arts, and reviews.
