The Highway Church of God (Bahamas) marked another milestone in its history with the installation of Bishop Lonford L. Bethel as its fifth general superintendent, during a service held at the historic Church of God Temple, located at Coconut Grove Avenue on Bishop K.D. Josey Way, on Sunday, April 13.
Before witnesses representing every church in the denomination and from every major island, immediate past General Superintendent Bishop Robert A. McPhee delivered the charge to Bethel and presided over his investiture.
Reverend Timothy Stewart, pastor of the Bethel Baptist Church admonished church leaders to get back to the basics of good Christian leadership, which he said was the use of prayer as the foundation for everything they do.
The newly appointed general superintendent said "successful leadership starts with a compelling vision that people can believe in", and provided an outlook of his plans, which included: expanding and maturing the church; a greater resolve and effort in shaping the lives of the young people; the reshaping of financial administration and fiscal responsibility of the organization; and the development of 21st century leaders throughout the islands.
Bishop Bethel's executive team includes First Assistant Bishop Winslow Moss, Second Assistant Bishop Rudolph Pinder Sr., General Secretary Bishop Karven Bain, General Treasurer Reverend Eric Josey and Assistant General Secretary Rev. Dr. Ronald Campbell.
Past general superintendents of the church include the late Bishop John Davis, the late Bishop K.D. Josey, Bishop Hubert A. Pinder and Bishop Robert A. McPhee.
Bethel was born in Lisbon Creek, Andros, and is the son of the late Livingstone and Aravilda Bethel. He has served as pastor of the Church of God Temple, located on Peach Tree Street, Freeport, since 1980. He is married to associate pastor, Minister Judy Bethel. They are the parents of 10 children.
