A 59-year-old man was killed in a fire that gutted his Chippingham home on Saturday, authorities said.
The victim, identified by neighbors as Kevin Young, was reportedly home alone when the fire started.
Superintendent Walter Evans, officer in charge of Fire Services, said it was unclear how the fire started.
However, he said, no foul play was suspected.
Evans said the home had no electricity supply.
Van Thompson, who lives across the street from Young, said when he noticed the fire, he attempted to call the police emergency lines, but they were down.
He said another neighbor eventually got through to the authorities on an alternative number.
Thompson said he had no idea that Young was in the burning home, as he had just spoken to him an hour before he noticed the fire.
"I didn't worry too much... because I said he probably wasn't in there," Thompson said.
"I feel really bad because I knew him all my life."
He said he and other neighbors tried to put out the fire using their hoses, but they only had a minimal impact.
Evans warned homeowners to equip their homes with smoke detectors and fire extinguishers.
Young reportedly lived in the home with his brother.
Evans said if people have challenges getting through to the police emergency lines, they can contact the fire control room at 322-1225 or 302-8404.
Evans also gave an update on the Homestead fire that claimed the lives of six people, including a two-year-old, last September.
At the time of that fire, Evans said investigators were expected to wrap up investigations within two weeks. However, on Saturday he said the matter was still being probed.
Family members told reporters previously they suspected foul play, but Evans said that had yet to be determined.
The victims were all found dead in the bathroom of the small four-room structure, according to authorities.
