The Bahamas Union of Teachers

The Bahamas Union of Teachers is very concerned about the instructions given to EXPATRIATE TEACHERS to be finger printed. For the past two (2) weeks the President of the union has been in communication with the Ministry and Department of Education, Ministry and Department of Labour, Department of Public Service about this matter, all to no avail. The expatriate teachers jobs are being threatened if they do not provide finger prints, these prints is costing them $100.00 each.

Today, the Principal of C R Walker Ms Trevor Mckay went to the extreme and loaded all expat teachers from her school onto a bus and had them transported them to Criminal Detective Unit to be fingerprinted. This is against the law, the Employment Act 2001, and when President Belinda Wilson called her to enquire about the matter Ms Mckay she said she was busy and she hung up the telephone.

The BUT will not stand idly by and allow any member of our union rights be violated. The Government is in violation of its own laws.

The BUT awaits a public apology to these teachers and all others who have been harassed, victimized, discriminated against and had their jobs threatened. A General Membership Meeting will be held on Tuesday, January 21st 2014 at 4:00pm at WORKERS HOUSE.

All teachers are asked to attend.
