Two World Golf hall-of-famers, five of the top 10 players currently ranked in the Rolex World Rankings and the winner of the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) 2012 Player of the Year award, will take a swing at the Pure Silk Bahamas Classic title.
The first stop on the LPGA 2014 Tour, the Pure Silk Bahamas Classic will run January 20-26, at the Ocean Club Golf Course. More than 100 golfers will compete in the event.
This impressive list includes Stacy Lewis, the 2012 LPGA Rolex Player of the year, Jiyai Shin, Inbee Park, Beatriz Recari, Suzann Pettersen, Cristie Kerr, Jennifer Johnson and Karrie Webb.
The other major winners in the field are Na Yeon Choi, Paula Creamer, Pat Hurst, Juli Inkster, Lewis, Brittany Lincicome, Se Ri Pak, Pettersen, Morgan Pressel and Sun Young Yoo.
The Ocean Club Golf Course will be set up at 6,644 yards and will play to a par of 36-37-73. The winner will receive $195,000 from a $1.3 million purse. This is the second time the event is being held in The Bahamas. The rounds in the inaugural event were shortened due to rain.
Georgette Rolle, Danielle Robinson and Taneka Sandiford will represent The Bahamas in the classic. Rolle, who received a sponsor's exemption into the field is the two-time Bahamas National Women's Amateur Champion, capturing the titles in 2003 and 2007. She is currently a LPGA Teaching professor.
This is the first professional classic for both Robinson and Sandiford. Robinson is a graduate of Alabama State University and Sandiford attends Redlands Community College in Oklahoma.
The Pure Silk Bahamas Classic is one of several major international events played at the Ocean Club Golf Course. The Michael Jordan Celebrity Invitational was held on the greens from 2001 to 2010.
Other events held at the golf course include the Office Depot Father/Son Celebrity Classic, as well as the Michael Douglas and Friends Celebrity Golf Tournament.
