Police question suspects in disappearance of Andros couple

Police are questioning several men in connection with the "suspicious" disappearance of an Andros couple, Assistant Commissioner Anthony Ferguson said yesterday.

Ferguson could not say how many men are in custody, but he told The Nassau Guardian that the group was brought from Andros to New Providence for questioning.

He added that police are still trying to determine what happened to immigration officer Sean Gardiner and his friend Tishka Braynen. Ferguson said police have not found the couple.

"In the investigation, we sought to talk to some people of interest who we have taken into custody, but we haven't arrived at any stage where any charges are brought against anybody," Ferguson said.

"We don't know what happened. We are still trying to determine what happened. We have a missing persons report. That's where we are at the moment."

Ferguson said there was evidence that the immigration officer's home may have been searched and that a gun was shot inside the home. He also said the immigration officer's government-issued vehicle was found a distance away from his home.

"We believe that they were taken from the home," Ferguson said. "[There was] damage to a washing machine. It appeared as if somebody discharged a firearm in the house, and there appeared to have been some searching on the inside of the house. "[They] are missing under some suspicious circumstances."

Several of Braynen's relatives in Andros did not want to comment about her disappearance when contacted by The Nassau Guardian yesterday.

One female relative would only say that the family is going through a tough time, adding that yesterday marked the seventh day Braynen was missing. Sources close to the investigation told The Nassau Guardian last week that Braynen's car was found at Gardiner's home.
