A Day of Upsets and Surprise in Grand Bahama Girls' Soccer

Fri, Nov 22nd 2013, 10:55 AM

The parents who came to watch got to see some great games on Saturday, November 16th. There were changes in league standings in three of the five divisions.

In the Curly Tail Division Pelican Bay Hurricanes led by Coach Shorn Malcolm and Coach Yvette Evans took the leader board by handing Coach Courtney Cunningham and her Jumex Juice Jammers their first loss of the season. In the other match up Hidden Island Treasure Hawks tied Grand Bahama Anesthesia Sleepers 1-1.In the Chameleon Division, Barefoot Gals beat Mulligan Meat & Spice Cutters by a score of 6-1. The Barefoot Gals are coached by Leonard Knowles and Marlene Hanchard. J.S. Johnson Cyberays slipped by Freeport Oil Breakers 3-2. The Cyberays are coached by Glinton Pinder and Anikka Linton.

In the Gecko division, Coach Ray Simpson and the Sawyers Fresh Market team kept on the top of the leader board by handing Polymers Fury their second loss of the season with a score of 3-0. Tenniya Martin, Isabella Rollins and Danae Malcolm all scored one goal for the win.

The other game, Big G’s Plumbing and Brad’s Car Rentals, was a fierce match up which had all the parents biting their nails. The final result was a 2-2 draw. Alina Austin and Tierra Simms scored for the panthers and Mikel Yallop and Gabrielle Simms scored for the chargers.

In the Iguana Division, spectators got to see the game they have been waiting for. Donnie Knowles and his Legal Eagles named and sponsored by Parris Whittaker & Co versus Robert Nabb and the Goal Diggers sponsored by Grand Bahama Shipyard. Because Coach Robert and Coach Donnie had been doing a considerable amount of trash talking since the league began about who was going to beat who in their match up, this was a very much anticipated game to see who was going to be able to “put their goals where their mouth was”.

Unfortunately Coach Robert Nabb was not able to get his Goal Diggers to dig deep enough for the goals needed to beat the Parris Whittaker & Co Legal Eagles. Final score: Parris Whittaker & Co 2 and GB Shipyard 0. Scorers of the match were Hanna Joy Simms and Lauryn McIntosh. When asked about the loss Coach Robert said “Donnie beat me at my own game by marking my goal scorer man to man. Don’t worry, we’ll get him the next time we play”.

In the other game the Municipal Motors, Coach Rohan Parkes from Mary Star is carrying out his winning tradition from primary school league and beat Ocean Motion Sting Rays 3-1. Scorers for Municipal were Abigail Simms (2 goals) and Joevaughnia Dean (1 goal). Lone scorer for the stingrays: Jaleah Taylor

In the Kamodo Division (15-17 yr olds) Floid Giddings and his Krosstown Courage girls continue on their winning streak with a 5-0 win over Adnil Marine . Goal scorers were Bahamas National under 17 player Gabrielle McDonald (4 goals) and Shanice Blatch (1 goal). In the other match up Henry Vacianna and our new team, Island Yogurt Chillers chilled the Show Off Gators by a score of 3-0. Goal scorers for the game were Dahlia Francis (2 goals) and Brianna Ritchie (1 goal). The Town & Country Kickin Cuties (3-5 year olds) were out in full force with 27 girls on hand to receive their shirts. It is a toss up who loves soccer more, the parents or the kids!? The coaches would like to extend a warm thank you to all the parents who stay to watch their girls play soccer. It is very encouraging for the coaches to see the interest they are showing in their daughters.

Play continues this Saturday, November 23rd from 2 - 4pm at the Freeport Rugby Football Club. To contact the league email:
