The Bahamas Boxing Commission (BBC) will begin a detailed registration of all members of the professional boxing fraternity in the country in short order, at the Flamingo Gardens office. At a meeting held on Thursday, BBC Chairman Alvin Sargent received the unanimous approval of the other commissioners to begin the process of registering everyone who play roles in pro boxing.
"We are happy that now there is a base for us to operate from. We are inviting all of the boxers, trainers, managers, promoters, match makers, referees, timekeepers and judges to come in and have themselves registered in their respective capacities. Very soon, we will advertise the dates and time frames for registration.
"This is imperative as we move forward to properly structure the personnel, involved in professional boxing. At the same time, we will be offering our service to the general boxing public, not just for licensing and the processing of sanctions, and documents of approvals. We will be providing advice to members of the boxing communities," said Sargent.
It is understood that several of the professional boxers, competing under the banner of The Bahamas, have been confronted with contract problems. They sign contracts that are not in their best interests and accordingly end up with difficulties as they continue with their careers. Every managerial contract of licensed boxers is to be delivered to the commission. This is in keeping with the act that governs professional boxing in the country. A primary reason is for the commission to be able to safeguard the rights of Bahamian professional boxers.
Actually, to ensure that they are serving their best interests, pro boxers are advised to provide copies of contracts to the commission, before signing. There is a present issue that could likely come before the commission in the near future. The commission is able because of its authority and jurisdiction to make contact with other commissions and boxing boards around the world to look into situations that relate to registered boxers.
With a base of operation now, the commission has been afforded the amenities to provide more direction for those involved with pro boxing. Sargent informed that on a daily basis (except Sundays), the office at Flamingo Gardens will be open to provide service from 10 a.m. On Saturdays, the commission will coordinate a social setting, primarily for interaction between members of the boxing family, and fundraising events.
Another priority item is the Benevolent Fund. This initiative has been started. A committee has been appointed. The objective is to start a fund drive that would eventually enable to the commission through the Benevolent Fund to provide assistance to members of the fraternity who are in need.
A new era is indeed dawning for pro boxing in the country.
