The mission just got a little harder for the Police Crimestoppers, now that they are into the second round of play in the Bahamas Government Departmental Basketball Association (BGDBA).
The Crimestoppers wrapped up their series with the Prison Challengers on Saturday, and will now play the Tronicquest Cybots in the next round, a team who beat them in the championship before. The Crimestoppers won, 52-49, on Saturday, and the Cybots closed out their series with the BEC Shockers, 78-56, on Saturday. Both games were played at the D.W. Davis Gym.
Head Coach for the Crimestoppers Anthony 'Cop' Rolle said he isn't afraid to play either team, but the statistics show that the two most devastating losses for his squad were handed down by the Cybots and the Shockers.
"All two of them are beatable," said Rolle. "When you get into the habit of picking the teams that you want, you never get it. The Cybots is a well coached team. They have some big and experienced guys who we can match-up against. It will be a good series with them. Every year they count us out. No one stops to think that we are contenders. We are a veteran team, and we've been together for years. As long as I have my point guard and Vernon, we are able to match-up with anyone."
Vernon Stubbs was the high scorer for the Crimestoppers on Saturday night, netting 22 points. He also pulled down four rebounds and had one assist. Freddie Lightbourne scored eight points, and Dario Seymour scored six. Putting up 17 points, in a losing effort, was Patrick Brice. Tresant Strachan scored nine points.
Rolle said: "I must congratulate the Prison team; they have improved tremendously. That team has come a long way. They are not the team we used to see in the past, the team that everyone was so used to beating up on. They have added a lot of youth to their squad. This is the first time that I can remember, and I have been around basketball for 20-plus years, that they made it into the playoffs. They were the sixth seed team so now they only need to build on that, but in this series, experience really paid off. We are the more experienced team.
"The only thing, for the past five years, I won three of the five. The two times that I lost, the injury to my big man Kenny Pinder, to me, contributed to the loss. Missing him is missing something big. Once we all can stay healthy, I see no reason why we can't take our championship back." As for the Cybots, Eugene Bain was the top scorer in their affair with the Shockers. Bain's double-double consisted of 29 points and 13 rebounds. He also had four steals. Ernest Saunders netted 20 points and also had four rebounds for the Cybots. The Shockers got 11 points each from Breston 'Horsie' Rolle and Brandon Ingraham. The BGDBA playoffs will continue tonight at the D.W. Davis Gym.
