Problems in Bimini

Dear Editor,

Bimini has once again seemingly become the poster-child of unsound, unsustainable development in the national media. Numerous reports are coming out regarding Resorts World Bimini's plans to transform this island into its idea of what it should be, while no information has been produced explaining the plans to deal with the impending strains on Bimini's resources and utilities. Additionally, as it is finally being proclaimed in the press, Biminites have essentially been left out of the discussions regarding their island's future.

Perhaps the most outlandish and absurd proposal being put forth by Resorts World Bimini right now is the idea of constructing a cruise ship terminal off the western shores of North Bimini. Not only would this terminal permanently diminish the gorgeous views of Bimini's famous waters, but it would also heavily impact the beaches and reefs that our tourism industry so heavily relies on. This is an unnecessary and foolish idea, and if our government isn't going to come up with a smarter, less destructive plan, then we would like to suggest one.

We understand that Genting (the owners of Resorts World Bimini) are new to the island, so we're willing to give them a pass on suggesting something so misplaced. We also understand that they have the money and resources to do things right, and that is what we all must expect of them.

The Bimini Blue Coalition is not here to fight people or obstruct business on the island, we are here to promote sensible, sustainable tourism. Therefore, we would like to propose a better plan for Bimini, one that doesn't diminish this island's existing tourism industry or infringe on Genting's plans to ferry more tourists to their resort.

First, finish the upgrades and expansions on the government dock in Alice Town. This was supposed to be done years ago, but the dock still sits in shambles, making an unsightly, unwelcoming greeting to so many of our guests.

After the government dock is expanded, determine how big a fast ferry can be brought in to land there. The Balearia Bahamas Express ferry, which we support, could carry over 300 passengers, but we believe the government dock could easily be expanded to accommodate a 500-plus passenger ferry.

After this vessel size determination is made, Genting could purchase two, three, four, or however many it wants of this sized fast ferry. Not only would it give them more flexibility with scheduling and maintenance, but it would also save them money running a smaller boat when they have a smaller number of guests. Realistically, despite their claims, they are not going to bring a full boatload over everyday on their enormous 1,600-passenger boat.

Utilizing smaller (yet still large) fast ferries saves Genting money; and upgrading and expanding the government dock is also far less expensive than building a terminal out west. Also, Resorts World Bimini still gets the traffic to its casino that it desires.

Bimini's western beaches, reefs and waters would not be affected at all, and the businesses and craft center in Alice Town would greatly benefit from the influx of people arriving into the heart of Bimini's tourist center.

Everybody wins, and nobody loses.

We are not against progress; we are not against development; we are simply asking our government and these wealthy foreigners to make wise, respectful decisions.
