Free National Movement (FNM) Chairman Darron Cash said yesterday that Washington, D.C. press attache Oswald Brown's suggestion to a ZNS news director to fire FNM operatives at the corporation is shameful and an affront to the democratic process of the country.
"What Oswald Brown wrote is an affront, it is obscene and it is unfortunately expected from Mr. Brown and Mr. [Andrew] Burrows," Cash said.
"Both of them are in the positions that they are in because they were dyed-in-the-wool, unrepentant agents of the PLP, prior to the 2012 general election."
Chairman of the Broadcasting Corporation of The Bahamas (BCB) Rev. William Thompson declined to comment on the matter when contacted yesterday.
In a Facebook post, Brown urged ZNS Executive News Director Andrew Burrows to fire FNM operatives at the corporation for "undermining all the good things this PLP government is doing".
The message from Brown was not sent to Burrows' private Facebook inbox as Brown said he intended to do.
Instead it ended up being widely reposted on the popular social media website.
"I'm sending you this inbox because I am mad as hell about what appears to be a well-organized attempt by FNM operatives at ZNS to undermine the leadership of Rev. William Thompson and indeed the entire current management at ZNS," Brown posted.
"If you follow Facebook, which I know you do, you would have noticed that Dominique Demeritte, whomever that is, has been unrelenting in her criticism of ZNS and she has been using some information in her posts that could only have been given to her (or him) by someone at ZNS.
"I think you need to find out who that person is and arrange for them to find a different line of work.
"We have got to stop being timid of firing people who are seeking to undermine all the good things this PLP government is doing."
Burrows responded that he is aware of what is going on, adding that the "source" at ZNS has "wrapped herself up in a tight little squeeze".
Cash accused Burrows of being an unrepentant supporter of the PLP prior to his appointment at ZNS.
"It is not surprising that they would behave in that manner and one can contrast that to the approach that the FNM took trying to move the broadcasting corporation in the direction of being a public broadcasting network," he said.
Many Facebook users expressed outrage, calling Brown's request a blatant sign of victimization.
However, Brown commented that, "My solution to this situation is exactly what I suggested: If the culprit or culprits are exposed, fire them.
"I make no apologies in suggesting this."
Cash said he was not surprised by the comments.
"It is just amusing that it has come into the public realm in this way," he said.
"But we know that that is the way that the PLP conducts its affairs."
When asked what he thought about similar allegations made against the FNM when it was first elected in 2007, Cash said, "I reject that out of hand.
"That's not the way the FNM did business."
