The Bahamas has done it again. Last week, the Nassau Valley Eight-ball (Pool) Association (NVEA) was invited to attend the 9th Annual West Coast Challenge, in Clearwater, Florida, from April 17-21, 2013.
A contingent of about 35 players responded to this invitation. The pool invitational had about 200-plus male players in the singles in two divisions, 'A' and 'B'. In the 'A' Division, Pat Carey, Robert Rahming, Roosevelt Albury and Willard Johnson all placed in the top 20, while Hailand Nottage, Martin 'Pork' Burrows and Michael Demeritte, placed third, fourth and fifth respectively in the 'B' Division.
The Ladies Division had about 31 players of which Laurie Lightfoot, eight-time ladies national champion, placed ninth overall.
In the Scotch Double, Martin Burrows and Laurie Lightfoot paired up to place sixth. According to reports, team play was very competitive with The Bahamas fielding teams in all three brackets. The Gold Division saw the Arnette's Big Sticks, captained by Willard Johnson, placed third. In the Silver Division, the Mega Hits Web Café Boys, captained by Martin Burrows, placed fourth, and in the Bronze Division, the Over Forty & Sporty Strokers, captained by Laurie Lightfoot, placed first. Her team consisted of Kevin Wood, Calvin Thompson, Martin Burrows Jr., Kendanique Williams and Tony Moss.
"This was indeed a great feat for The Bahamas where competition was gruesome for the entire four days, where teams battled into the early morning hours until that Sunday at 2 p.m.," said Lightfoot through an e-mail.
