A man who was allegedly driving the vehicle that struck and killed two Canadians as they walked along Queens Highway in Exuma two weeks ago is expected to soon be charged for the couple's death.
The driver, a 26-year-old Bahama Sound, Exuma resident, allegedly slammed into Ronald Gandza, 57, and his wife Jill Marie Gandza, 54, on the highway around 10 p.m. on April 25.
Police said the visitors, who were residents of West Farmington, St. Catherine's, Canada were struck by a gray 2000 Nissan Sunny.
Gandza reportedly died on the scene, while his wife succumbed to her injuries at the local clinic later that night.
Police yesterday said the driver left the scene of the accident and later received treatment for minor injuries he sustained in the crash.
Police said they intend to file formal charges against the man early next week.
The Gandzas worked with Canadian Royal Potcake Rescue, an organization that rescues stray dogs and finds homes for them.
The couple was described by relatives, friends and colleagues as kind and always eager to help people and animals.
In recent weeks, Minister of State for Transport and Aviation Hope Strachan spoke of her ministry's concern with the number of traffic-related deaths the country has recorded so far this year.
