Two Bahamians, Terae Sweeting and Krishanda Campbell-Brown, played major roles in their school, Benedict College, winning the 2013 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Women's Track & Field Championship this year, the first one in school history. Benedict College, located in Columbia, South Carolina, clinched the title Saturday evening at the historic Edwin Moses track between the hedges of B.T. Harvey Stadium on the campus of Morehouse College.
Sweeting, who had major knee surgery in 2010 after tearing her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and meniscus during the javelin throw at the CARIFTA Games in the Cayman Islands, was named to the conference's first team in the javelin, and Campbell-Brown was named to the second team in the triple jump. Campbell-Brown was also named as a co-Most Valuable Performers (MVP) of the meet after scoring 24 points.
In total, the Lady Tigers scored 224.50 points to dominate the three-day event. The defending champions Albany State finished as the runner-up this year with 160.5 points. Clark Atlanta finished third, with 97.50 points.
As for Sweeting, after having two outstanding seasons for the Benedict College Lady Tigers on the volleyball court and being a member of the softball team, the junior academic and athletic standout returned to track and field, to compete in the javelin, this spring semester. She recovered tremendously from knee surgery, thanks in part to tremendous support from the Bahamas Association of Athletic Associations (BAAA).
In addition to her success on the field, Sweeting also attained All-Academic Team honors with a 4.0 Grade Point Average (GPA). The accounts major was one of five Lady Tigers named to the conference's All-Academic Team. Sweeting and Campbell-Brown were two of eight Lady Tigers named to the All-Conference teams. The Benedict Lady Tigers also won the SIAC East Division regular season championship this year. Team Head coach Frank Hyland was named East Division Coach of the Year.
