Christian Heritage On The Verge Of Repeating

Dhylan Culmer scored more than half of his team's points yesterday, to help the Christian Heritage Angels pull off a Game One win over Teleos Academy, and come within one game of repeating as junior boys basketball champions in the Bahamas Scholastic Athletic Association (BSAA). Culmer only scored eight of his 24 points in the second half, including just one in the all-important fourth quarter, but they got timely contributions from key members when they needed to, to pull off a 44-38 victory. Up until the fourth, Culmer had scored 23 of his team's 27 points.

He disappeared in the fourth but the other Angels stepped up to preserve the victory. "Well, we did a good job of sharing the ball in the fourth quarter, and we made some key plays late in the game," said Culmer. "We just stepped up when we needed to and we were able to come up with the 'W'. Hopefully, we could play the same way in Game Two. We're still coming up short defensively, but we're confident that we could get it together in time for the next game. This win today was a big confidence booster for us."

The Teleos Cherubims gave the Angels their only two losses of the regular season, but with the big victory on Tuesday, the Angels now find themselves just one win away from their second consecutive BSAA junior boys championship. Game Two in the mini best-of-three series will be played Thursday. "We won today, but our performance was a lil shaky. I'm sure we'll play a much stronger game the next time around," said Angels' Head Coach Emmerick Taylor.

"Defense is the key. I need my point guard to step up, especially defensively. We can't come out here in Game Two and expect to win playing the same way because Teleos is going to make some changes and we have to be prepared for that. They're not just going to give us the game. We have to come out here and take it." With his game-high 24 points, Culmer was the only player in double figures for the Christian Heritage Angels. Behind him, Maverick Arthur had six. Charles Rahming paced Teleos with 11 points yesterday.

Stephen Humes had seven, and Arlington Brown contributed six. "We had a chance to win the game today, but simple mistakes caused us. We missed a wide open lay-up but I guess that is how the chips fall sometimes," said Teleos' Head Coach Maurice Fawkes. "We're going to re-group and come back strong for the next game. We want to take this championship, but we have to play strong for it.

We allowed Dhylan to score at will in the first half, but in the second half we ran a box and one on him, and he didn't score that much. Somehow, we still came up short, so we have to come out and play much better in the next game." The score was even at 20 at the half, and behind Culmer who scored all seven of his team's points in the third quarter, the Christian Heritage Angels took a 27-24 lead going into the final period.

As mentioned, Culmer only had one point in the fourth but his teammates made some clutch shots and hit some big free shots down the stretch. In Game One of the senior girls championship, the Mt. Carmel Cavaliers got 18 big points from Aileen Felix to turn back Teleos, 24-13. Hadassah McCardy scored five points to lead the Teleos Academy Cherubims. Game Two in that series will also be played on Thursday.
