Beres brings the love

Valentine's Day may be gone, but legendary Jamaican artist Beres Hammond is set to bring the romance back tonight when he hits the stage in The Bahamas.
Hammond, who is known for his love music and soulful voice, has been wooing Bahamian crowds for years.
The 57-year-old reggae singer has performed eight times in New Providence with the promotions company Above the Rim Productions. His ninth Bahamian concert, "A Night of Love", is scheduled for the Wyndham Nassau Resort, Cable Beach at 10 p.m.
Hammond is best known for hits such as "No Disturb Sign", "She Loves Me Now" and "Putting Up A Resistance".
And while Hammond's melodic voice has been attracting large crowds for years, some may wonder why Bahamians continue to support his concerts. According to concert promoter J.S., the answer is simple: Bahamians love Beres and Beres loves Bahamians.
"If we had the ability to bring Beres twice a week, we'd do it and people would come out," he said.
"It's like one of the reasons people go to Bamboo Shack or one of the reasons people go to the Fish Fry. They love it. His music translates over generations. His music is not designed for just grammy, or mammy... his music speaks to grammy, mammy and their grandchildren. And it's positive music."
Another reason people should come out: There won't be a 10th anniversary anytime soon.
In fact, if you want to see Beres Hammond perform live in New Providence again, you'll have to wait three years, as the company has decided to take the Night of Love act on tour.
"Next year we're going to Turks and Caicos, the year after we're going to Freeport and the year after we're doing a boat cruise," J.S. said.
"So this is one of the rare moments that people will have an opportunity to watch Beres perform."
But if those aren't reasons enough for you to attend the concert, promoter Al Jolley said that Above the Rim Productions knows how to put on an exciting show.
"Above the Rim is celebrating 25 years," Jolly said. "So we have been in this for quite some time now. It's definitely going to be a show. Beres also knows how to put on a show. He is a crowd pleaser. Everyone enjoys his music.
"We keep bringing him back by popular demand. His music just brings something out in a person. As a matter of fact, I think I was [conceived] when my mom and dad were listening to Beres Hammond's music."
And just to sweeten the pot, Jolly added that there will be a special surprise.
"I can't say anything about that. Come out and see. Like the song says, if you don't believe me, just watch," he added.
Joining Beres Hammond on the stage tonight will be Canadian R&B Grammy Award winning artist Melanie Fiona, who is best known for her hit song "4 AM".
Jolly said this will be Fiona's first time performing in The Bahamas.
Jamaican dancehall artist Christopher Martin, who is best known in The Bahamas for his song "Cheaters Prayer", is also scheduled to perform.
Well-known Bahamian artist Sammi Starr and R&B artist Julien Believe will also hit the stage.
"A Night of Love" concert usually takes place in November, however the promoters decided to change the date this year.
"February is more suited for a night of love," Jolly said. "This is just the love month."
The concert was originally to take place on Saturday, but the promoters changed the date to Friday to not compete with another concert taking place this weekend.
Tickets range between $50 and $150. Tickets come with either a complimentary glass of wine, champagne or both. VIP, platinum and double platinum tickets are available at the Reef Restaurant, the Wyndham box office, Signature Styles, Gizmos & Gadgets and Racks Liquor Store.
