Hon. Dr. Hubert A. Minnis invests in CRIME PREVENTION with CCTV's for Killarney February 20th, 2013 Nassau Bahamas

At a Killarney Constituency Meeting last night, Killarney’s Member of Parliament, Hon. Dr. Hubert A. Minnis, met with residents of the area, and gave them an update regarding plans to protect the area from crime, with the installation of CCTV’s.

Funds that will be utilized to complete the project will be the $50,000 which is allocated by the government to each constituency. Dr. Minnis explained that he has decided to take a segmental approach in placement and setting up the systems by utilizing the assistance of police to identify the hotspots in the area.

Dr. Minnis revealed that areas identified for the first set of CCTV installations will include entrances and exits to Seabeach, Westridge, Emerald Coast and South Westridge. He explained that Seabeach has been significantly affected by house break-ins and all areas have been afected by illegal dumping. He also expressed his concern and informed the residents about a rape which occurred in Westridge just last week.

The CCTV’s will be monitored by the police and the intent is to piggy back on a system which is already in place on the Cable Beach Strip. That area is presently being monitored and proving to be beneficial in solving issues of traffic violations and vehicular accidents.

Dr. Minnis is hoping that the installations of CCTV’s will begin soon, but a date has not yet been set because of ongoing discussions with Cable Bahamas and BEC which are needed in order to complete the process. He also said that his plan is to extend segmentally, the coverage of camera surveillance to other areas of the constituency next year.

After the cameras have been installed, prominent signs will be placed to warn visitors and would be perpetrators that the area is being monitored by CCTV.

The security company who will be installing the cameras has also offered to install up to 10 alarms on a monthly basis in Killarney homes free of charge. The residents would then pay for monthly monitoring to ensure their continued protection.

Individuals within the area who already have camera surveillance on their properties were encouraged by Dr. Minnis to adjust the camera, if possible, to include surrounding homes and properties, and to be their brother’s keeper, which is a part of Killarney’s Know Your Neighbour (KYN) initiative.

Dr. Minnis also encouraged the various neighbourhood associations to continue to work together and to create a database of residents which would include profession and skillset so as to assist with employment opportunities and to facilitate communication. He has pledged to organize a serious of meeting within the various associations that would seek to provide ideas and opportunities for unemployed persons.

Lemar Pinder, the youngest executive of the Boy Scouts Association in The Bahamas also spoke with the residents about the benefits of the Boy Scout and Cub Scout program. Some of these benefits include an increase in bonding, decrease in crime, mentoring and the development of future leaders. Both Lemar and Dr. Minnis have agreed to arrange meetings with the various Killarney homeowner associations in an effort to establish Boy Scout and Cub groups in the constituency. They are also encouraging all constituencies in New Providence to do the same. Lemar has travelled extensively throughout the world and gained a wealth of experience. Throughout the world, Scouts learn the cornerstones of the Scout methods which are designed to instill character, citizenship, personal fitness, and leadership in boys through a structured program of indoor and outdoor activities.

Killarney residents were given an opportunity to ask questions, give feedback and suggestions and express concerns. If you were unable to attend the meeting last night, please feel free to forward any issues that need to be addressed to Dr. Minnis at killarneymp@gmail.com Dr. Minnis is committed to continue representing Killarney residents, his employers, to the best of his ability as their Member of Parliament, The Voice of Killarney.
