Evan Wisdom and other officials in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology are making sure that you won't miss a shot, when the Government Secondary Schools Sporting Association (GSSSA) Basketball Championships tips off on Thursday.
The games will be aired live, thanks to Cable Bahamas Ltd., one of three sponsors of the event. Other contributors were Colina Insurance and the Bahamas Telecommunication Company (BTC). Wisdom is making final preparation for the event which will highlight the top junior boys', junior girls', senior boys' and senior girls' teams. The games will be held at the Kendal G.L. Isaacs Gymnasium.
Giving his stamp of approval, for what he is calling 'a must see' was Lionel Sands, director of education. He said: "The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology wishes to thank its three major sponsors for this year's championships - Cable Bahamas, Colina Insurance and Bahamas Telecommunications Company (BTC). Cable Bahamas has been supporting these championship games for the past two years, and now this year, they have graciously provided the means for these championships to be broadcast nationally. We know that sports has a way of bringing communities together, and these games will indeed unite fans who will enjoy the high caliber play of the teams that made it to the finals. We commend our student-athletes and their coaches who have demonstrated sportsmanship, on the road to these championships. We look forward to an exciting series and may the best team win.
"The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology supports athletic programs such as this because they inspire our students to do their best, and the discipline that transfers down into the other areas of their lives. I would wish to extend my sincerest thanks to Evan Wisdom. Ever since he came into this ministry, he sought to bring our high school sports to a level where everyone has access to seeing it and being a part of it."
Wisdom invites everyone to come out and be a part of the activities. Three new initiatives have been added to this year's championships, which Wisdom believes will set them a part from the other organizations. The Battle of the Fans, courtside seating and a hype halftime show featuring Chase Fernander.
"One of the new initiatives we have is something called Battle of the Fans, that is where the fans themselves get to participate," said Wisdom. "One team will sit on one side and the next on the other side, battling with each other in terms of fan participation. They will write their names on tickets that will be drawn during the game. The winners will receive gifts from BTC. Court side seats will also be available, where the audience will be closer to the action that is happening. Some 100 seats will be available for the public. A half time show will feature Chase Fernander and some school bands."
The teams to play in the championships will be announced this week.
