A look back at Beneby's predictions

A month ago, just before the New Providence Women's Basketball Association (NPWBA) tipped-off, president of the league Simone Beneby predicted that the 2012/13 season would have been the best one in recent years.Beneby looked past the fact that only six teams are competing for the championship title, a decline from last season. She encouraged persons to come out, to the D.W. Davis gym, to watch some of the best basketball games played by females in New Providence. So far, Beneby said the attendance has been high and the games are evenly matched."Looking at the rosters and the schedule, I knew that it was going to be a pretty competitive season," said Beneby. "Of the six teams that are competing in the league, four have separated themselves and can now be referred to as the top teams. On any given night, any one of these four teams can win. The bottom two teams, which are The College of The Bahamas Caribs and the SkyBahamas Saints are pretty much even, so when these two teams play those games are always exciting. "No game, thus far, has been a blowout. Not even the games between the top four teams. All of these games have been won by 10 points or less. Those four teams are evenly matched and are now fighting for position. So there will be all around play this year and we expect to see more exciting games. We have tried to make some improvements on how we do things. We wanted to have a smoother league this year, one with few hiccups."The six teams competing in this season are the Bommer G Angels, the Four J's Cheetahs, SkyBahamas Saints, the College of The Bahamas Caribs, the Johnson Lady Truckers and the Super Value Cybots. The Junior All-stars opted out of competing this year. The Lady Truckers and Cybots are currently leading the way with the defending champions, with the Cheetahs and Angels rounding out the top four teams. Games are played every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Weekday games get underway at 7:30 p.m, and weekend games start at 7:00 p.m.. All games are played at the D.W. Davis gym.Beneby said: "There are a few matters we have to attend to within in the league, try to get some of the things that we wanted to get on stream going. I suspect that these things will be addressed in the upcoming weeks."The league will break for Christmas in two weeks and re-open in January.
