'Emperor' Knowles' Son Murdered

Nearly a year-and-a-half after Kenton Dion 'Emperor' Knowles was gunned down on the streets of New Providence, his 25-year-old son met the same fate Sunday night. Dario Knowles of Step Street, Fox Hill was shot to death on Lincoln Boulevard off Cordeaux Avenue around 10:45 p.m., according to police. He was found lying lifeless in the street, shortly after several gunshots were heard in the area. Police gave no official word on the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Police sources, who were not authorized to speak about the case, said it appeared that the weekend killing - which marked the 100th murder for the year - was gang-related. Knowles' murder occurred days after a 17-year-old high school student was shot and killed on New Providence. Though the frequency of murders has picked up in recent weeks, head of the Central Detective Unit Superintendent Paul Rolle said police are on top of things.

"We have control of the situation. And yes these murders cause concern for us, but we investigate each one and try to bring closure to them," he said. One-hundred-and-fifteen murders occurred up to this same point last year. Among them was the death of 'Emperor', who became another casualty among many to fall in a gang war that raged in the capital last summer. Knowles was shot and killed on July 27 at Faith Avenue and Sir Milo Butler Highway, near the Texaco gas station.

He was reportedly riding a motorcycle when a vehicle knocked him off and at least one gunman opened fire on him with a machine gun. He was previously accused of murder and drug trafficking, though he was never convicted of either charge. No one has been charged with his murder. Police also had no one in custody for Dario Knowles' murder up to press time. Rolle appealed for the public to come forward with information that can help close the investigation. Anyone with information on the murder is asked to call 911, 919, Crime Stoppers at 328-TIPS or the Central Detective Unit (CDU) at 503-9991.
