PLP SENATOR Jerome Fitzgerald yesterday accused Minister of State for Finance Zhivargo Laing of being "confused" about vital economic issues.
In a statement issued to the press, Senator Fitzgerald said that Minister Laing has sought to "redefine" how the gross domestic product (GDP) is calculated for the purpose of the debt/GDP ratio.
"Without getting into the technicalities of it, in 2007 the GDP of the Bahamas was around $7.1 billion. Between 2007 and 2009 we have had negative growth of six per cent and we are projected to have around negative one per cent this year. Six per cent of $7.1 billion is $426 million, so at the end of 2009 our GDP was around $6.7 billion.
