Police have arrested five men in connection with the murder of the 40-year-old brother of South Beach MP Cleola Hamilton, head of the Central Detective Unit Paul Rolle said yesterday.
Police said they were questioning two 18-year-olds, and another three men ages, 19, 22 and 28, in connection with the killing of Desmond Collie, who was killed Sunday morning.
According to police, Collie was at a business establishment on Solider Road when he was attacked by a group of men pursuing another man.
He received injuries to the head and died at the scene, police reported.
A relative, who was with Collie the night he died, said they were on their way home when Collie decided to stop at a friend's bar on Solider Road for a few beers.
He said the pair noticed a group of men fighting in the street near the bar they were in and decided to leave.
Moments later as they were leaving the bar, Collie was attacked by an assailant who was chasing another man, according to the relative, who did not wish to be identified.
"What we are gathering is he was just innocently at the location," said Assistant Commissioner of Police Anthony Ferguson earlier this week.
"He was not involved with any altercation with anyone. There was an incident with other persons. He was just an innocent bystander that was injured."
Police picked up all five men in a two-hour window starting at 10 p.m. on Monday.
"We expect charges within another day or two," Rolle said.
The killing pushed the murder count up to 96 for the year so far. Last year this time the murder count was 109, according to The Nassau Guardian's records.
