A Haitian woman on Monday admitted she tried to smuggle tens of thousands of dollars to her native country. Police caught Claudette Milfort with $74,042 at Lynden Pindling International Airport before she boarded a Pineapple Air flight for Haiti on November 22, 2011. The money was separated in 18 envelopes addressed to different people.

Milfort, a Bahamian resident, pleaded guilty to a charge of attempted exportation of restricted goods prior to the start of her trial before Deputy Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethell. Her lawyer, Ian Cargill, said Milfort was just assisting people who had asked her to carry money to friends.

He said, "The average person doesn't know, in circumstances such as this, that they are breaking the law." Magistrate Bethell confiscated the money and let Milfort off with a warning. She said, "I won't impose any further fine. If you're caught again, you will be serving some time."
