On Wednesday, 22nd April, 2009, The Grand Bahama Port Authority Limited spearheaded the ?Keep Grand Bahama Clean? Campaign, in conjunction with the Department of Environmental Health Services, Urban Renewal Programme and Sanitation Services. The primary message of this program is:

'Keep Grand Bahama Clean'
It's everyone's business, and everyone's responsibility:
our lifestyles, our future, and our economy depend on it!

In honour of this year?s EARTH DAY: The Green Generation, the ?Keep Grand Bahama Clean? committee synchronized Earth Day celebrations with all schools from West to East Grand Bahama, inclusive of Sweetings Cay All Age School by way of the planting of a native tree donated by participating local nurseries, ending with a litter clean-up on the school?s campus.

The first EARTH DAY was held in 1970 in order to promote awareness of environmental issues. Today EARTH DAY is observed by more than 500 million people and national governments in 175 countries.

At the end of our observance of EARTH DAY, the ?Keep Grand Bahama Clean? committee assisted with the planting of 32 trees as Grand Bahama Island ?s contribution towards the Bahamas Environment Science and Technology Commission?s pledge to plant 1 million trees in one year.
