Lawyer of convicted pedophile withdraws from case

A convicted pedophile will have to represent himself since he and his lawyer failed to agree on the course of his appeal.
Andre Birbal, 49, has filed an appeal against his conviction of having unnatural sex with two male students at Eight Mile Rock High School. Birbal was sentenced to 35 years in prison in February 2011.
Last month, Birbal reconsidered firing his court-appointed lawyer Jairam Mangra, after he was told he would not get another advocate at the
public's expense.
But yesterday it became clear that Birbal and Mangra had irreconcilable differences over how the appeal should be prosecuted.
Court President Anita Allen allowed Mangra to withdraw as counsel. She warned Birbal that he would either have to hire his own lawyer or represent himself when the case resumes on June 26.
Back in March, Birbal fired Craig Butler over differences on how his appeal should be presented.
