Higgs & Johnson Partner and Head of Litigation Oscar N. Johnson Jr., along with Tara A. A. Archer, firm partner and chair of the Consumer Litigation Committee of the International Bar Association (IBA), attended the Annual Litigation Forum hosted by the IBA titled 'Multi-jurisdictional Disputes: The View From Inside The Corporation', held in New York from May 9 to May 11.
Jed Rakoff, U.S. district judge for the Southern District of New York, was the keynote speaker at the conference dinner. He was nominated to be a federal judge in 1995 and is respected as a tough and independent jurist who has taken tough stands against big banks and Wall Street. In August 2009, he rejected a $33 million settlement between the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Bank of America because the settlement did not "comport with the most elementary notions of justice and morality". At the dinner, he spoke on the pros and cons of the introduction of class actions into European jurisdictions, in particular France.
Johnson commented: "The sessions were timely, informative and proved to be very worthwhile as they highlighted current issues that affect our litigation clients. It was an excellent opportunity to gain insight from professionals in other jurisdictions as well as share on what is happening within our jurisdiction."
Johnson and Archer practice a full range of corporate and commercial law, specializing in commercial and civil litigation, merchant shipping and admiralty law, insurance, international finance, employment law and law of insolvency.
