Work permits to continue despite GB unemployment

FREEPORT - Minister of State for Finance Zhivargo Laing said work permits will continue to be issued even though many Bahamians are still unemployed on Grand Bahama.

Mr Laing explained that work permits are only issued for positions that require certain skills and qualifications that do not exist within the local labour force.

"We have to recognise that every work permit does not represent a job that a Bahamian can hold," he said.

The Grand Bahama Shipyard is perhaps the largest employer of foreign labour here on the island.
