Collegiate tennis player Kerrie Cartwright added a national title to her collection yesterday, leading the Tyler Junior College Apache ladies to their third consecutive tennis title.
The Apache ladies went into the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Division I women's tennis tournament ranked number one. The week-long tournament was held in Tyler, Texas. Cartwright, who was expected to lead the squad in both singles and doubles, didn't disappoint. She pulled off the double, taking the singles and doubles titles.
In singles, where she was ranked number two, Cartwright squared off against Diana Davitaia, defeating her 6-2 and 6-2. She teamed up with Audrey Leitz and pulled off a 6-2 and 6-3 win over Davitaia and Zsofia Biro.
Cartwright said: "It was great. We played really good. The rounds were good. All of them were tough, but good. We had a great week. It was an excellent experience."
The Apache ladies was one of 29 teams competing for the NJCAA crown. The team scored 47 points, just five points ahead of State College of Florida which accumulated 42 points. Cowley College, the school Davitaia represented, was third with 31.5 points and ASA College finished fourth with 35 points.
Cartwright is expected to return and assist The Bahamas' national team in Fed Cup play, next year. The young tennis player did not compete in the event this year. That team consisted of Nikkita Fountain, Larikah Russell, Gabrielle Moxey and Simone Pratt.
The Bahamas was unsuccessful and was relegated to Group II of the Americas Zone earlier this year. The team faced Canada, Argentina and Peru in group play. Men's Davis Cup play will continue later this year. The Bahamas is in the Americas Zone Group III after dropping a round-robin tie to Jamaica, Honduras, Bolivia and Aruba. The team that will play later this year has not been named as yet.
