Grand Bahama businessman Peter Turnquest visited Lucaya International School to view the International Baccalaureate (IB) student art exhibition for 2012. The International Baccalaureate is a demanding and highly respected pre-college diploma program. Students who choose to take the art course must do a two-year program which requires them to create a minimum of 12 pieces of studio work and a workbook, reflecting a commitment to personal media experimentation, cultural and historical research, critical analysis and an ongoing investigation of a personal theme.
The students then host an exhibition, which acts as a concluding IB art examination. The six young ladies exhibiting this year showcased work in photography, print, modeling, paintings, and origami.
The exhibition is open during school hours and is a preface for the IB invigilator, who is sent to examine the students' work, according to Julie Hoyle, LIS art teacher.
"I was genuinely impressed with the work," said Turnquest, who is the Free National Movement's (FNM) candidate for east Grand Bahama. "Each student took the time to explain the reason behind their choice of pieces and themes. They were so confident in their explanations and the caliber of their work was of such a high standard, you forgot they were high school students."
The artists' work remained on display for one week as they prepared for the final examinations for the rest of the IB program.
