112 in the running for Primary School Student of the Year title

After a three-month nationwide search, 112 of the country's best and brightest primary school students have been nominated to represent their respective schools at the 16th annual Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Awards Program. The students are vying for the top title of National Primary School Student of the Year, which will be announced on Saturday, May 19. But the finalists and nominees will share in $100,000 in scholarships and prizes.
Primary schools throughout the country nominated one student from their institution they felt would be deserving of national recognition, and of being among the who's who in primary schools in The Bahamas.
The program recognizes those students who have demonstrated excellent academic achievement, leadership ability, campus and community involvement and good citizenship, according to Ricardo P. Deveaux, president and chief executive officer of the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Foundation.
The competition, which was established in 1997, is sponsored by the Bahamas Primary School Student of the Year Foundation, in partnership with the Bahamas Pan-Hellenic Council. The program was founded to fill a void to salute younger achievers, because it was felt that major emphasis was being placed on the achievements of high school students.
The judges will have a difficult task to identify the 2012 winner, because each nominee goes into the program qualified to be selected. The judges are Jacqueline Bethel, chair; Autherine Turnquest-Hanna, deputy chair; Philip Stubbs, chief tally judge; Beryl Armbrister, Deborah Bartlett, Rubyann Darling, Zelma Dean, Lionel Elliott, Tyrone Fitzgerald, Sister Mary Benedict Pratt and Stuart Howell.
To date, 1,302 students have been recognized in the awards program and $700,000 has been presented in scholarships and prizes.

oThe award ceremony will be held at Golden Gates World Outreach Ministries on Carmichael Road. Additional information on the 2012 awards ceremony can be found on the foundation's website www.bahamaspstoy.org, or by contacting the foundation's office at (242) 364-4889. You can also assist by sponsoring a student as a trophy, travel or scholarship sponsor.
