HAMILTON, Bermuda - Tamara Myers wanted to go out with a bang in her final CARIFTA Games, and whereas it might not have been the gold medal that she was seeking, it was still a sweet silver for The Bahamas.
The national junior record holder had a best jump of 11.62 meters (m) - 38' 1-1/2" - in the Under-20 Girls Triple Jump to walk away with the silver medal from these 41st CARIFTA Championships here in Hamilton, Bermuda. For Myers, it was nowhere near her junior national record of 12.90m (42' 3-3/4"), which would won her the gold medal by the way, but it was still good enough to win her the silver.
"I'm a little disappointed because I couldn't get my technique together. My stride was off a bit and my run through wasn't what it should be," said Myers on Saturday. "It just wasn't working for me today. I'm happy with the silver but still disappointed that I let the gold get away," she added.
In Myers' defense, they were facing a strong headwind Saturday morning here in Hamilton. Last year in Montego Bay, Jamaica, she leapt 12.35m (40' 6-1/4") for a silver. Now, she has her second consecutive silver medal.
It was a 2-3 finish for The Bahamas in that event as Antonique Butler won the bronze medal with a best jump of 11.43m (37' 6"). Jamaican Sabina Allen won the gold medal with a jump of 12.18m (39' 11-1/2").
"It's my first medal so I'm kind of excited about that," said Butler on Saturday. "In terms of distance, it's not what I wanted to do, but there were a lot of factors that came into play today. I feel like my steps weren't what they needed to be but I'll get them next time."
Butler finished sixth in the event last year, but improved to a third place finish this year. She still has one more year of eligibility left in the Under-20 division.
The two medals in the Triple Jump were expected to set the stage for The Bahamas for the remainder of the Easter weekend championships.
