Police have confirmed that four people are dead after the private plane they were on board crashed minutes after takeoff from the airport in Treasure Cay, Abaco around 1:30 p.m

The Nassau Guardian understands that the victims are second home owners who routinely travel to Abaco. Police said the plane, a single engine Piper aircraft, exploded when it crashed into some trees a few yards away from the runway. Superintendant Paul Rolle, head of the Central Detective Unit in Nassau, said the victims are believed to be Americans. According to a resident of Treasure Cay who spoke to the Nassau Guardian from the crash site, the bodies of the passengers were burnt beyond recognition. The resident, who arrived at the crash site a few minutes after the accident, said the plane was in pieces and debris from the crash was strewn about the runway. Police have not yet released the identities of the victims.
