Guardian Business: Can you briefly describe your experience in the tourism sector and what your role is today? Evelyn: My experience in the tourism sector commenced in 1988 with the opening of the former Carnival's Crystal Palace & Casino, when I was appointed as an executive secretary in the human resources department. I held this position for two years gaining valuable insight into the critical role that the Human Resources department played in the overall objectives of the company, particularly as it relates to a hotel/resort operation. I was then given the opportunity to gain extensive experience in the area of hotel operations when I was appointed the executive assistant for Robert "Sandy" Sands, a position I held for 12 years before being appointed to my present role as assistant director of human resources for the Wyndham Nassau Resort. GB: Why did you choose to work in tourism as a career? Evelyn: I chose to work in tourism as a career because it gives me a level of satisfaction knowing that I have contributed in a positive way to our country's number one industry. GB: What has been your most memorable moment? Evelyn: Every day that I am able to make a contribution to our number one industry is memorable for me knowing that I have an opportunity to make a difference is very gratifying. GB: Has the industry changed since you started your career? How? Evelyn: The industry has certainly changed since I started my career in the tourism industry as there is greater competition in the number of destinations and types of tourist experiences that are attempting to offer more value for money coupled with a greater expectation of customer service. GB: What should The Bahamas focus on to stay competitive? Evelyn: The Bahamas needs to focus on continuously monitoring its various target markets so that we can ensure that we are offering the right product to the right people at the right price. Additionally, we have to ensure that the benefits (compensation, health, training) are such that it attracts the best talent to this country's critical industry.
